Glenelg 2.5 lost to Highercombe 4.5

Royal Adelaide was in the best condition we had seen it for a while with a warmish and sunny afternoon.

We started quite well with Ben Magi, Lachlan Booth and Campbell Rawson jumping out to good early leads. Andrew Grzybowski and Anthony Olsen were hanging with their opponents, all square through the first 9 holes.

So many pennant matches ebb and flow from one team to another and this match was no different. Highercombe came back at us and through nine holes we had our noses in front. However the next hour turned in our favour and we looked winners. The last hour however saw Highercombe fight back strongly and with some remarkable shot making and solid putting, they took the lead away from us.

After Campbell McLuckie’s 3/1 defeat we went down early. Lachlan Booth had an early victory 7/6 in the number five match whilst Anthony Olsen fought hard for an important 2/1 victory. Ben Magi let a comfortable lead slip and went down 3/1 bringing the overall score to two matches each.

After fighting back from 3 down, Matt McGowan lost on the 17th, while Andrew Grzybowski lost his match down the last hole. Campbell Rawson squared his match on the last but it was too late, with Highercombe too strong on the day. A very close match which now leaves us struggling to make the finals. We hope to recover against Blackwood around their home track on Sunday at 10:15am. We hope to see some familiar faces watching on.

Another big challenge for the boys, playing The Vines at The Vines. A lot of side slopes and testing breaks on the greens.

Driving to the course it was raining and quite overcast and it looked as though we were in for some bleak weather conditions. Fortunately though the sun came out quite a bit and we played in ideal conditions with a swirling cool breeze testing all players.

There was an air of confidence amongst our playing group following our win last week and the 3 – 4 loss was a disappointing result – the pressure is now on to win all remaining games to stay in contention for a finals berth. A tough but achievable task.

The day belonged to Sam Hynes, James Brown and John Noble – these boys played really well and adapted to the conditions to set up significant wins. Sam (at No 4) was under the card when he won his game 6/5 striking the ball very strongly and putting really well. James Brown (at No 3) came from behind at the half way mark to win 3/2. Congratulations to John Noble (at No 7) on his first Pennant victory for the club – his game was tight all day but won some late holes to win 2/1 – well done John.

Marty Ardill (at No 6) suffered his first loss for the season – one of those days for Marty where not much went right and his opponent played steady golf all day. Sam Laslett (at No 5) was holding his own early but a couple of three putts later in the round proved costly as Sam went on to lose 4/3.

Mark McDonald (at No 2) played his first game for the year – his opponent got away to a dream start with a couple of birdies and just as Mark was getting back in to the match his opponent holed another long birdie putt on 9 to go 3 up. Mark tried valiantly to hang in but his opponent continued to play very solid golf to win 5/4.

Well it was now 3 games all, with the result hinging on the No 1 game. A lot of pressure for young Mitch Nash – he was 1 down playing 16 after being square in his game for most of the day but a loose drive on 16 found the trees and resulted in him then going 2 down. He played a magnificent second shot into the 17th to about 15 feet to give him a good birdie chance but his wily opponent used his home course knowledge to hole a 20 footer for birdie and seal their game.
