Glenelg 1.5 lost to Grange 5.5

The team arrived at Flagstaff Hill to wonderful weather, a sunny afternoon with a light breeze. We understood that this match was very important, for a victory would have ruined Grange’s hopes of reaching the finals and would keep our dreams alive.

Our boys started very well, many of them making birdie 4’s on the opening par 5 10th hole. We slipped back soon after and at half way were well behind. It was looking bleak.

As the back nine wore on, our leads where being eroded and Grange were extending their leads. Campbell McLuckie lost his lead with three holes to go and could not recover. Ben Magi held on to his lead and was successful 2/1 while Lachlan Booth and Campbell Rawson ran into two hot players, both of their opponents finishing under par. Anthony Olsen also met another player finishing under par, the current SA Amateur Champion Jack Williams, losing 5/4. The overall match was now lost.

Matt McGowan was making a comeback against Anthony Murdaca after being three down with six to go. Matt stood on the 18th tee all square hitting a solid shot to 15 feet, but not good enough as Murdaca made a solid birdie, hitting his tee shot on the par 3 9th hole to four feet.

Last man on course was Andrew Grzybowski and after being four done with six to play found his swing and made a few birdies to stand on the 18th tee one down. With his opponent Tom Bond hitting his tee shot into 12 feet, Andrew nearly holed his 8 iron finishing only 3 feet away. Andrew made his birded and halved the match, the final result 5.5 to 1.5 matches in Grange’s favour.

This coming Sunday we play Highercombe at Royal Adelaide Golf Club teeing off at 12.15pm. If you want to see golf at the highest level, come and watch your boys representing their club with pride. They would welcome your support.

Glenelg 4.5 defeated Royal Adelaide 2.5

The Royal Adelaide B Pennant team were coming off a strong first up 5-2 win last week. They are a very youthful team being ably led under the watchful eye and guidance of none other than David “Doc” Cherry. They came to Glenelg with that youthful confidence but also aware they were playing a strong Glenelg side on their home course.

It was a glorious Glenelg day – the sun shining and a coolish gentle breeze.

There was a bit of extra pressure on the Glenelg boys, playing at home and with the weight of expectation to do well.

It was pleasing to achieve the 4.5 to 2.5 match result – early in the match Royal Adelaide took a slight advantage but by the midway mark the home team had taken a narrow lead and held that advantage to the end.

Mitch Nash at No 1 played solid golf all day with lots of pars to win 3 and 1.

Simon Connelly at No 2 played David Cherry and they had an absorbing match. Simon birdied the first 2 holes to take a 2up lead – but David called on his vast experience and played steady golf to fight his way back into the game. He had to withstand further birdies from Simon on 10 and 12 and eventually won their game 2 and 1.

James Brown at No 3 drove the ball long and straight to be 3up playing 15 – his opponent had to hole a 10 foot putt for par on 15 to keep the match going – he duly holed it, then won 16 with a birdie from 40 feet to keep the match alive (that’s pennant golf!). The Royal Adelaide youngster then went on to win both 17 and 18 to halve their game.

Sam Hynes at No 4 played steady golf all day and finished with a well-deserved 2 and 1 win.

Congratulations to captain Sam Laslett on his first pennant victory for Glenelg. Sam overcame a shaky start to get back to square after 9, then went on for a convincing 4 and 3 win.

Marty Ardill continued on his winning way and proved far too solid for a 6 and 5 win.

Henry Duregon at No 7 started strongly to take an early lead but a steady resolve from his opponent and some loose shots from Henry saw the Royal Adelaide youngster take the game 5 and 4.

Thank you again to all the caddies for their support to their players and to the family, friends and club members who were present to urge the Glenelg players on – that support is greatly appreciated.

Well done also to the Glenelg Golf Club, the greens’ staff, the bar staff and the Pro Shop for presenting the course in such great shape and for making the visiting teams feel very welcome.
