Report by Geoff Attenborough
On a perfect winter’s day with cool conditions and little breeze, our Simpson Cup Team travelled to play The Vines of Reynella Golf Club on their home course. The course was presented in immaculate condition, beautiful fairways and the greens fast and true.
To keep our small hopes of a finals berth alive, our boys were aware of the task at hand.
James McDonald led our team out playing at no 7. After a poor start being three holes down after three, James slowly clawed his way back into the match to be square after 13. Unfortunately, he could not keep the momentum going to lose 3/1.
Next to play was Anthony Olsen in excellent form, so far being unbeaten this season. This match was fairly tight for the first nine with Anthony being only 1 up after eight holes. This match changed complexion very quickly with Anthony being 3 up after 12 holes, and from there, this match was completed with a win to Glenelg 4/3.
Next out was David Hiern who had a tight battle all match which could have gone either way. Unfortunately, David could not quite get over the line going down 2/1.
Josh Hayes, playing at no 4, got off to an indifferent start to be 1 down after two holes and not really striking the ball well. Josh, after five holes was back to square and all of a sudden seemed to find his form. Being 2 up after eight holes, Josh completely out played his opponent to go on and win 7/5.
Will Starkey playing at no 3, and with his confidence very high after some strong wins, continued on his winning way to finish his match 5/4. Will seemed to be in control for all of his match and if he had less trouble reading the greens, this contest could have been over much earlier.
Playing at no 2, Lachlan Barker had a tough contest against a much older, wily opponent. This match was very tight for the first eight holes with Lachlan battling to keep the ball in play off the tee. After being only 1 up after eight, Lachlan found his best form to quickly go 4 up after 13. The result was completed at the 15th with Lachlan winning 4/3.
Ben Hallam, returning this week after injury, had a tough battle all day and could not quite get over the line. After the biggest advantage to either player in this match being either 1 up or 1 down, Ben had a one hole advantage after 15. Unfortunately, he could not quite get the job done losing the last three holes to lose 2 down.
Playing The Vines on their home course is never an easy assignment and to get a 4/3 win is a solid result well played everyone. Unfortunately, with only one match to go against Kooyonga at Royal Adelaide next Sunday, we are unable to make the Simpson Cup final. However we expect to finish the pennant season on a high with a solid showing against the favourites.
With the Bonnar Cup and A1 women’s teams assured of finals berths in two weeks time, it would be great to see Club members out giving the teams the support they deserve. We hope to see you there.
