Glenelg’s Jenny Lee and Jason Goldsworthy have been bundled out of the 2015 Australian Amateur Championships today following the first round of elimination matchplay.
Lee, who was runner up to Minjee Lee in the 2013 championships, was defeated in a surprise result by Metropolitan Golf Club’s Jo Charlton, losing a close match, 2 down. Behind in her match early, Lee fought back hard to take her match to the last hole but was unable to push the result into extra time.
Goldsworthy, after surviving a nervous 9-way playoff yesterday, faced New Zealand’s Ryan Chisnall in today’s first round match, but was well and truly outplayed by the Kiwi, losing his match 5/4. Struggling with the pace and feel on the greens, Goldsworthy said he simply could not get the ball into the hole, and despite playing well, was not able to match Chisnall’s superior ball striking which saw him shoot a 6-under par 66 in yesterday’s second qualifying round.
Remarkably, 10 of the top 15 seeds were bundled out today, including medallist and top seed, Nick Marsh, who lost to national squad member, Lucas Herbert, leaving the draw wide open with two rounds to be played on Friday. The men will play their round of 32 tomorrow morning, then the round of 16 in the afternoon on a marathon day.
