Glenelg’s Juniors took on a strong Grange junior side at Tea Tree Gully on Sunday, and despite having to forfeit two games, Glenelg’s juniors performed admirably, eventually going down 3 matches to 2.
With Liam Kennewell and Jack Tanner unable to play, the Club was only able to field three “eligible” players, with our Buchanan boys prevented from representing the Club under Golf SA pennant conditions. Despite the head start to the opposition, we were still able to win two of the three live matches and return a respectable 3/2 loss against a full strength Grange team.
Jack Hynes was pretty much in control of his match against Jin-Young the whole day. The odd adventure beneath some fairway bushes was the only thing that prevented Jack from finishing the match early. Jack was never really threatened and after a series of squared holes, he did enough on the par 3 penultimate hole to close off the match 3/1.
Jackson Kalz did not have a great day on the greens but did enough to win his match against the talented Emma Sutton 2/1 to keep his unbeaten Pennant run intact.
Hyoyi Pyun hit some great shots, particularly on the par 3, 13th and long par 3, 3rd holes where she probably would have won NTP on both occasions. However, her Grange opponent, Jamie Smith, was too consistent and played some great recoveries to take out his match 6/5.
Jack and Aaron Buchanan took on Matt Lange and Riley Marshall in unofficial scratch matches. Both Grange players were able to take advantage of their strengths off the tee, particularly on the long par 4s around Tea Tree Gully to post comfortable wins. Even still, the lads enjoyed the opportunity to represent Glenelg’s Junior Pennant team and we are sure they will be great additions to our side when they become eligible to represent our Club in 2015.
Whilst we are now out of finals contention, there will still be a lot to play for against Flagstaff Hill next week. Jack Hynes wants to complete his junior pennant career with a win, Jackson Kalz is aiming to complete his first Pennant season undefeated and Hyoyi will have her best opportunity to post her first win. And as a team, we are pretty keen on finishing the season on a high.
