Glenelg’s Juniors square with top-side Kooyonga

Report by Brenton Kalz
Team Manager

Glenelg’s Sharp Cup team took on top dogs Kooyonga at The Grange’s East Course on Sunday with the contest finishing a respectable all-square at 2 and half matches each.

Jack Hynes played a much improved game this week leading David Ling for most of the day.  Unfortunately, Jack was unable to capitalise on some good positions he put himself in and missed a couple of crucial putts, none worse than a 12 inch miss on the 17th gifting ‘Dinga’ the hole which squared the match.  Both players made regulation pars down the par five 18th and the match finished squared.  Due for a win next week!

Liam Kennewell’s  short game was on fire all day as he got up and down from everywhere around the green. Liam proved to be too strong for his rival and friend Frank Vicuc, winning comfortably.  That makes it three from three for Liam!  Well played.  Both at 13 years of age, I can see the Liam vs Frank rivalry to be one to watch over the coming years.

Jackson Kalz raced off the blocks to be 2 up after three holes but a string of two birdies and four pars by his opposition saw him 1 down after nine. Jackson got one back early in the back nine before two wayward drives (yes he does miss an occasional fairway) proved costly and he found himself in trouble at 2 down with four to play.  But then it was all Jackson, with his own string of pars and birdies winning the final four holes to finish 2 up.

Hyoyi Pyun found her opposition Oscar Moss to be too strong in the blustery conditions.  Hyoyi also found too many greenside bunkers which, as she admits, is not her strong point.  But agai,n Hyoyi enjoyed the experience with the highlight of her day, getting to drive a golf buggy for the first time (supervised, of course!)

Jack Tanner did well to stay in touch with his more experience opposition, Leyton Hunter, who made the most of his opportunities to forge ahead by three at the turn.  To Jack’s credit, he was able to stay with him on the back nine, stretching the contest to the 16th green and will be better for the experience.

Despite a solid team result, we remain 4th on the ladder with two rounds to play.   With Liam and Jack Tanner unavailable next week, we’ll have to pull a rabbit out of our hat to match the ever improving Grange team.
