Bonnar Cup team lose tight match to Grange

A Narrow Loss – but still in the hunt!

Playing at The Grange against The Grange was always going to be a tough assignment. The contest was tight all day and for the second week in a row the match was tied three games each with the last game all square playing the last hole. Unfortunately James McDonald (at No.3) experienced some tree trouble to lose the hole to a steady par from his opponent for The Grange to record the narrow 4/3 victory.

After nine holes The Grange held the advantage – with Glenelg leading in just two games, behind in four and one game all square – we needed a lift and it was Sam Raschella (at No.6) who recovered from being 3 down after seven to play some very solid golf on the back nine to win his match 1 up – a highlight being his tee shot on the short 15th hole to within four inches of the hole to get back to square. Sam showed great composure and patience over the concluding stages and was rewarded with a thoroughly deserved win – well done Sam – and another great caddying effort from Josh Hodgson. This win kept our chances of an upset win alive.

Earlier, Braeden Kelly (at No. 7) played steady golf to lead all day and recorded a solid 3/2 win.

Matt Mudford (at No.5) played sub-par golf early to be 3 up after five holes and he maintained the pressure on his opponent to win his match 3/2.

In the meantime, Ben Magi (at No.4) played some nice golf but couldn’t match his opponent who had a pretty red hot day to beat Ben 7/5.

Will Starkey (at No.2) was a little out of sorts today and couldn’t maintain his unbeaten run. His opponent played well to win 6/5.

James Bridgen (at No.1) had an absorbing duel all day. He had chances to win his match but lost the 17th to lose 2/1.

The 4/3 loss still leaves us in third place and still a realistic chance to contest the final. The challenge is now there to win our last four remaining matches to give us that chance – a very achievable challenge.

We do not play over the June long weekend, so our next match is on 15th June when we play Kooyonga on our home course at 11.15am.
