My Srixon International Classic experience – Liam Kennewell

Report by Liam Kennewell

I flew with Dad to Sydney on 29th September to participate in the 2013 Srixon International Sub-Junior Classic held at Kurri Kurri Golf Club in the Hunter region of NSW.

On the first day, Tuesday, 1st October, I started on the back nine and shot five over and brought it home with two over on the front for a total of 79, net 72.  In the second round the following day, despite very windy weather, I played well again with two over on the front nine and five over on the back for another 79, net 72.

Day three and I started only one shot from the lead in my age group (12 years and under), but I lost my swing and had a very bad day with an 88, net 81, and fell back to 4th position, nine shots from the lead.

On the last day, I still got to play in the final group which was a great experience for me.  I was calm and relaxed and shot two over on the front nine and birdied the 18th for another two over on the back – a total of 76 for the day (four over) and a net 69.  I still finished in 4th position in my age group, only six shots off the lead, and 25th in the overall Sub-Junior Classic event.

I had a great time playing my first big tournament and made a lot of new friends from all over Australia.  I would like to thank the Glenelg Golf Club Foundation for all their support as without it, I would not be able to attend events like this.  Finally I would like to thank Adrian Wickstein and everyone involved in the junior program at Glenelg for their help.
