What a stunning day for Glenelg Golf Club! On a hot autumn day in perfect golfing conditions on a stunning golf course we came away with the Simpson, Sanderson and Bonnar Cups!
With Jack Leonard away in Brisbane on interstate representative duty, we brought in Simon Gallie for his first Simpson Cup match of the season. After much discussion we put him into the no. 2 position rather than move everyone up one position and it was a move that paid off.
Going out first at no. 7 Nick Wake had his hands full from the get go. He was 3 down after 4 holes and that set the trend for the day unfortunately. He just ran into an opponent who was too good on the day with the match all over with 4 holes to play.
Mick Phillips continued his good form winning the first hole and getting to 3 up after the seventh. He got to 4 up after 10 before his opponent got one hole back. Mick then closed out his match with a win on the 15th.
Zac Bray got off to a slow start to be two down after the 4th hole. However with the confidence of some good recent form behind him he went to work to reduce the deficit and reached the turn all square. He then took the lead with a stunning birdie on the long par 3 12th. He also won the next hole and was 2 up with two holes to go. Both players made solid pars on the difficult 17th to give Zac the win.
Jumping to the no. 1 position Kade Bryant had it all his own way from the start against Alex Hendrick. He quickly won two of the first 3 holes and by the 8th he was 4 up. Alex could find no answers to Kade’s great play and two more wins early on the back nine took the margin out to 6 holes with Kade going on to win his match on the 13th.
Playing at no. 4 Michael Munn got off to a solid start. He was never headed all day taking the lead on the 4th hole and reaching 2 up at the turn. He went 3 up on the 14th and was dormie with 3 to play. Both players hit into the left bunker on 16 and Michael then hit a great bunker shot to guarantee a half on the hole and a 3/2 win. This was the fourth and winning point for the day that delivered us the Simpson Cup!
Josh Hayes had a hard fought match with Darren Baynes. Josh lost the opening hole but quickly got back on track to take the lead on the 5th. It was all square after the 10th but Josh then lost the next 2 holes. He was 2 down with two to play when news came through that we had secured the winning 4 matches and his match was declared halved.
In the no. 2 position Simon Gallie perhaps delivered the performance of the day. He came up against an in form Ross Steedman who was undefeated this year and who was named as captain of the Simpson Cup team of the year. However Simon was up for the challenge and he proceeded to deliver 5 birdies in the 14 holes played. A birdie on 9 took him to 3 up. He got to 4 up after 11 before Ross won the next hole. With the margin at 3 holes with 4 to play this match was also declared a half once the team had the winning 4 points. A stunning performance!
Looking back on the scoresheets as I write this it was a relatively stress free day for a change although it didn’t feel that way on the day. We had some good leads early and were in front at the turn. So often matches tighten up on the back nine but that didn’t really happen as our players either extended or held onto their margins. No match went to the 18th and only one reached the 17th.
Thanks to the caddies Ryan Faggotter, Scott Kerruish, Adam Bryant, Adam Bland, Harry Coote, Glenn Sterrey and Sam Wake. It was also great to see so many supporters come out and support us on the day and throughout the season. The players really do appreciate your support.
Pennant golf can’t function without our sponsors so I would like to thank Bradley Trade Services, Chess Moving and Vault Mobile Self Storage for their support.
A large part of our success is down to the support we received from the coaching and professional staff. Thanks to Shane Robinson as head of pennant golf and to the coaches Adam Bland, Ryan Reavley and Connor Chant. A thank you also to my co-manager Gary Thompson.
At the pennant dinner on Sunday night the men’s pennant award winners were:
Kade Bryant – The Ian Symons Memorial Trophy for Pennant Player of the Year. Kade played in the no. 1 position all year always taking on the opposition’s best player compiling 6 wins and a half from 8 matches.
Jack Leonard – The Bob McLuckie Trophy for Junior Pennant Player of the Year. Still only 16 Jack played 8 matches recording 6 wins at no. 2.
Mick Phillips and Harry Edwards jointly for Outstanding Achievement. Mick played mostly Bonnar Cup last year but he established himself in Simpson Cup this season playing all 9 matches recording 6 wins and 2 halves. Playing in Bonnar Cup Harry won 7 of his 8 matches.
A mention also for Josh Hayes who was named in the Simpson Cup Team of the Year. Josh played in all 7 minor round matches recording 6 wins. Josh has now been a part of 5 winning Simpson Cup Teams!

Sanderson Cup
FINAL | 13th April
Location: Royal Adelaide | vs Kooyonga
Final won by Glenelg 4 – 1
Jill Hodge squared with Jaime Hards
Zoe Manton defeated Matilda Miels 6/5
Maiya Jakupec squared with Emily Giotis
Bec Hardy defeated Hayley Hunt 5/3
Sarah Crocker defeated Rachel Fry 6/4
What a fantastic win to the Sanderson Cup team on Sunday with the Glenelg girls peaking at the perfect time.
Stepping into the number 5 position for the final with the departure of Grace Ferrier to Queensland for the State Juniors, Sarah Crocker played magnificent golf from start to finish. Her opponent was always under pressure and Sarah had a convincing 6/4 win. Sarah was also named Pennant Team Player for Glenelg which was well deserved. Well done Sarah.
The ever reliable Bec Hardy continued her strong form, also putting her opposition under pressure from the start. Bec was 5 up after 9 and sealed her match and the trophy with a birdie on the 15th. Bec also made the pennant team of the year – a great achievement and she won the Sue Tuohy trophy for the Glenelg pennant player of the season. You have played great golf Bec – congratulations on your achievements.
Maiya Jakupec was under pressure early from her long hitting opponent. She was 3 down after 3 however battled hard all day and stayed in her match. Her match was called off when the team had won. Maiya has played consistently well all season. Well done.
Zoe Manton clearly must love the pressure of finals. Her golf on Sunday was terrific. She was 5 up after 6 holes and finished on the 13th hole with a convincing 6/5 win. A brilliant match Zoe. You have certainly played sensational golf in the finals.
Jill Hodge had a tight seesawing battle. Jill was 1 down after 12 and had a putt for birdie to get her match back to square when it was abandoned due to the team win. Jill has played strong golf all season and has been a great leader to the younger girls in the team.
Thanks again to the caddies for your enthusiasm and support of this team.
To the Glenelg supporters – it was great to see so many of you out at RAGC and definitely inspired the girls.
To the coaching staff, many thanks for your efforts and support this season and to Shane Robinson for his sage advice on team selection.
It has been a pleasure managing the Sanderson team and we now have the opportunity to relax and admire our recently acquired silverware.

Bonnar Cup
FINAL | 13th April
Location: Glenelg | vs The Grange
The Glenelg Bonnar team finished 3rd after the home and away series this year. Last week we just overcame RA to earn the right to compete in this year’s GF against Grange at home. It was an exciting climax to the season for the club with all 4 pennant teams competing – the others at RA.
We hit off the 1st at 7:30 in perfect conditions and all players settled into their matches quickly.
At No. 7 Kyle Feltus got us off to a great start winning 2&1.
Fletch Ryan followed on with a clinical win at No.6 5&3.
Ben Winton then played steadily in the No.5 match to be 2 up after 16.
At the same time Matt Jacquier had his hands full in the No. 4 match eventually going down 3&2.
In the No.3 match Harry Edwards was enjoying some great form to hand us our 3rd win 3&2.
All eyes turned back to the No.5 match where Ben had faltered on 17 & 18 to be heading to extra holes. Halving the 1st, Ben grabbed the advantage, playing conservatively off the tee with a well struck 3 wood to the corner. A great 2nd to front left set up a win to take the match. This was 4 matches in and the Bonnar was coming back to Glenelg!
Will Starkey, in a great contest for the No.1 match, was delighted to pick up on 18, call his match square and let the celebrations begin.
Congratulations to the Simpson and Sanderson teams winning their GF’s at RA, with the Pike girls falling at the last hurdle after another great season.
The Club has been magnificently represented across all SA pennant teams this year and we can all be very proud of our multiple wins.
Club luminaries, players, coaching staff and supporters all gathered for the annual pennant presentation night at the Club to cap off a great day. Well done all!!
Thanks as always to the caddies for all their great work and to all the supporters coming out to be part of the day. Bloody brilliant.

Pike Cup
FINAL | 13th April
Location: Royal Adelaide | vs Kooyonga
Result: Win to Kooyonga 3 matches, Glenelg 2 pulled matches
The Grand Final on Sunday against Kooyonga was a flight I would have preferred to win.
All our Pikies were in to win, and coming runners up, an amazing feat.
Being 1st on the ladder is so special, with a total of 5 matches played, where we won 4 matches and tied 1, and then the Semi-final we won convincingly against the Mid North.
Match highlights:
No 1 player: Bec Hughes replaced Sarah Crocker as our number 1 player. Bec was focused and determined to win, however was unable to finish her match.
No 2 player: Tonia Ross stepped up to take on our number 2 position. She lost 2 and 4, however played with true grit and determination.
No 3 player: Lou Pike put her very best foot forward and gave it her all, however, was unable to finish her match.
No 4 player: Sam White played the number 4 position. Sam’s opponent was formidable and she lost 6 and 4.
No 5 player: Jo Rawson pulled out all stops to take her opponent to the 18th. A stirling effort and lost 1 up.
Our caddies Cath, Anne, Nick, Hanna and Wendy, were there to rehydrate and support our players. You all went above and beyond.
There are a couple of girls who did not play in the finals, but without them we would not have been in the Grand Final. They are Jo Ricourt and Wendy Featherstone. The other two players who were whisked away to the A1 team, was our beautiful Grace who I’m sure any wins she has in the future, will be because she played in the Pike team!! Also, our beloved Sarah who put us on top of the ladder. She was able to play 5 of the rounds with us and her beautiful daughter Pip, our Pikelet mascot!!
I would also like to thank the reserves who were there, willing and able to step in as required, especially Wendy Vaughan who seemed to be over grades she didn’t know she was qualified for.
I would also, like to give out a big thank to everyone who came and watched our girls during the season, giving them the encouragement and support.
On recalling the season on Sunday night, if we had won today, I would have come away with a different view – saying it is easy. It is not easy. The dedication and determination of all the players is to be commended and I am extremely proud of you all.
