Last week’s event was the $2m Australian PGA Championship held at Royal Queensland won by Min Woo Lee at 20 under par. Lachy Barker was our sole representative with Jack Buchanan not receiving an invitation and unable to progress through qualifying. Lachy shot 71 -71 to sit at even par after two rounds. There was a long wait on Friday afternoon to find out if he would make the cut for the weekend but he got through right on the cut line. Solid weekend rounds of 68-69 saw him finish at 5 under and in a tie for 33rd. This was good enough for a cheque of about $14,000. He was able to maintain 5thposition on the Order of Merit. However, ahead of him on the OOM are Min Woo Lee and Mark Leishman who are unlikely to play the minimum number of events required to stay on the list at the end of the season. This is very important as the top three on the final OOM will earn a place on the European Tour in 2025.
This week the tour moves on to Sydney for the $1.7m Australian Open at The Lakes and The Australian. It will be played in conjunction with the Women’s Australian Open. Both Lachy and Jack will be in action with Jack receiving a tournament invitation. In addition to the prizemoney on offer are three positions in the 2024 Open Championship to be held at Royal Troon. These places will go to the leading 3 players who are not already exempt. Good luck to them both and they will also have a bit of additional support from a group of Glenelg juniors who will taking in the action.
