Report by Geoff Attenborough
(Team Manager)
On a perfect day for golf on Sunday, Glenelg’s Simpson Cup team prevailed in a narrow win at home over a determined Royal Adelaide side. The match was struggle for our team most of the day but were able to break away on the second nine to scrape home with a four matches to three matches win.
Our normally reliable number seven player, Andrew Gryzbowski, had a tough match and will be the first to admit he was not at his best to lose 3/2 . I am sure he will rebound next week to again give us the start we are becoming accustomed to.
Playing at six, Josh Hayes again showed his enormous ability with a strong 5/4 win. He had a battle on his hands, only being 1up after nine holes but exerted his influence on the back nine to forge ahead to win 5/4.
Anthony Olsen rebounded today after being disappointed last week with a gutsy 4/3 win in his number five match. It was a very important win to give us the advantage going into the closing matches.
At number four, Matt Overall lost his match 3/2 to an opponent who simply had a better day with the putter – it just shows there is a fine line between winning and losing at match play at this level. I am sure Matt will rebound next week.
Matt McGowan playing at number three did not get away to the best start in his match being two down after three holes, however he quickly found his A grade game to win six of the next seven holes to be 4up after tenholes. Matt was never headed after this and won convincingly 4/3.
Lachlan Booth had a very tight tussle in his match at number two, eventually winning 2/1. It was a pivotal win for Glenelg to give us the 4/3 result. Lachlan showed great resolve under pressure being two holes down after 12 holes, he then won four of the next five holes to give us the decider.
Our number one, Campbell Rawson will be ruing two, three putt greens late, in his match. This allowed his opponent back into the match and they were all square standing on the 18th tee. After both being on the green for three, Campbell missed his 25 foot putt for birdie and hisRoyal Adelaide opponent calmly holed his eight footer for birdie and a win.
Thanks to all supporters for coming to watch teams play I am sure it gives them a lift and we hope to see you at future matches.
Thanks also to the greenstaff for presenting the course in an outstanding manner, the players I am sure feel there would not be a golf course in better condition anywhere in South Australia.
