Report by Geoff Attenborough
(Team Manager)
Glenelg’s Simpson Cup pennant team produced another solid performance winning 5.5 matches to 1.5 matches against Mt Lofty in the second round at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club on Sunday.
Although the result was convincing, in the end it was not all one way for the team as after nine holes we had three players up, three players behind and one all square. On the second nine we gained the ascendancy over Mt Lofty and forged ahead to gain a strong win.
We were again led out by Andrew Gryzbowski who was solid as rock at number seven winning 4/2 after being square at the turn. Next at number six was our ice cool young recruit, Josh Hayes, who led all day winning 4/3. Matt Overall played at number five and also led all day with a polished performance winning 5/4. Anthony Olsen playing at number four did not have the best of days nor any luck and lost 4/3 to a wily old veteran of over 200 Simpson Cup matches, Phil Roberts, who does not let you get back in a match when he gains the upper hand.
Matt McGowan played at three and showed some great resolve to gain a halved match after being four holes down after four played. His determination to get back into the match was great for the team as it is sometimes easy to think it is not my day and weaken out of the contest, but not Matt, who fought out the match to the end.
Lachlan Booth played at number two and was his normal solid self winning his match 3/1 in a very workman like performance – he just gets the job done every week. Campbell Rawson as our number one player produced an outstanding effort winning 2/1. His composure after being 3 holes down early to then win 6 holes in a row shows the resolve of a very good player and was a great captains performance.
The team has put down a solid foundation for the rest of the season and would love to see some Club supporters come out for the upcoming match at home at Glenelg this Sunday.
