Pike Cup Report
Round 5, 30 June
Grange were always going to be tough contenders. Starting on the back nine made those last few holes even more challenging, especially with the wind and chill factor increasing near the end of the day. The Kooyonga track was well presented despite the heavy rains from the drenching the day before. Casual water and large puddles lengthened the shots in, especially if you were unlucky enough to be caught up in one with your drive!
Three matches down at the turn, the team rallied on the back nine and fought to the end, with a pleasing result of square – 2 ½ games each.
Beck found her form with solid chipping and putting in a closely contested match – not much in it for most of the 18 holes. One down playing the 18th hole, despite a magnificent up and down out of the 9th front bunker (last hole for us) her 1 down deficit remained.
Lou had a close match also with little in it. Being the late runner that she is, winning the last two holes to square her match was a real save for the team. I think Lou will agree – a great escape!
Eliza bolted out of the block on the front nine with a comfortable lead of +4. A few misguided shots in the middle of the round but steadying to take out her match 5/4. Again another great win for Eliza and the team.
Sam had her opponent covered throughout most of the day taking the turn at +2. She extended this lead early on the back nine, lost a little ground in the middle but steadied to win her match 3/1
Tilly fought from behind most of her match, with her opponent having a better day than most. Slowly clawing her -4 deficit back to -2 with some fine shots on the back nine but eventually losing 3/2.
A big congratulations to all the players who have got us into the Semi-Finals next week. TeamGlenelg have a clear lead at the top, having won 4 ½ matches out of 5, giving us the advantage of playing the 4th team – Mid North at Royal Adelaide 11.50 on Sunday.
We are fully aware it is an even playing field now – we have a team of fighters who give 110% to every shot – it’s going to be an exciting day for us all.
Again many thanks to the caddies whose golf smart, steadying encouragement and support of their players is so invaluable. And to our band of supporters – we look forward to seeing you all again next week.
