The Glenelg Simpson Cup Team continued their unbeaten run with a very strong 5.5 – 1.5 victory over Southern at Mount Compass Golf Club last Sunday.
No. 7 – Simon Gallie. Playing his first Simpson Cup game for Glenelg, Simon had a wonderful day. From his first tee shot, he was in command and completed his match with a 4/3 win. After winning the Saturday competition and shooting 3 under on Sunday, you could understand why Simon was in love with the game of golf.
No. 6 – Michael Munn. Getting out to an early 2 up lead, Munny then produced a run of 3 under par on his last 6 holes to have a well deserved 6/5 victory.
No. 5 – Anthony Olsen. In another high quality game the lead seesawed all day. Anthony, as we have come to expect, held his nerve to win his game 1 up. In a ‘you had to be there to see it’ moment, Anthony’s up-and-down from the green side bunker on 18 to win his match was seriously outstanding.
No. 4 – Harry Burner. Back into the team after a week away, Harry moved up the order and took a while to settle being 3 down at the turn, however a strong fight back saw him on even terms after 16. He went on to win his match 1 up after his opponent encountered some difficulties on the 18th green. A very good comeback Harry.
No. 3 – Ben Layton. It was really good to see Ben back on track with his game, in a high quality match with little separating the pair all day, a halved match seemed a fitting result.
No. 2 – Frank Vucic. In a game paired against a wily veteran in Chris Burns, Frank held his own to the turn, but some good golf from Chris and a sour putter of Frank’s soon saw the match slip away for a 4/2 loss.
No. 1 – Josh Hayes. Playing on his old home course, Josh showed his excellent recent form and comfort in his surroundings, the match was always going to be his and he completed a solid 6/5 victory.
Well done guys, it was high class golf from you all, now for the Final this Sunday.
As three of our teams are at playing finals this Sunday at The Grange it would be terrific if we had some serious members support.
