With the onset of the cooler weather and the reduced need to cut playing surfaces our course maintenance attention is turning to other areas outside this need. Our focus for turf management over the next month will be to condition the turf for the stresses of the coming winter, with reduced growth and less recovery time.
Over the last week we have aerated tees and high traffic areas to alleviate soil compaction and improve moisture infiltration through winter.
When playing you all would have noticed wooden posts “popping up” on course over the last week around tees and walkways, this is to help manage cart traffic in these areas and to protect the turf from compaction as a result. With less cutting requirements, we can allocate a little more time to bunker maintenance which has been a focus over the last week several bunker bases and faces been repaired. As well as a focus on bunkers, course staff have been active in tree maintenance, planting out mounding behind the 2nd green, laying turf in bare areas and repairing the path leading up to the clubhouse from the Western carpark.
Over the next fortnight, in addition to continued bunker maintenance and vegetation management, works will be carried out to beautify the mounding between the 3rd and 4th holes and also seeding the mound between the 3rd green and 4th tee.
Its been a great first fortnight as Course Superintendent with all staff and members that I’ve met welcoming me to the Club for which I thank you all and I look forward to providing you with regular updates on course activities.
