Vicki & Jack Hynes take out Owen Whitford Trophy

Mother and son pairing, Vicki & Jack Hynes, took out the 2012 Owen Whitford Trophy on Friday in a thrilling game of matchplay one up against the junior pairing of Will Starkey & Cassidy Evreniadis.

The final was a close affair from the beginning with only one or two holes separating the pairings all day.  Vicki & Jack took the early lead and held it for most of the round, only to be faced with an impressive charge from the youngsters in the final few holes.

One up with two holes to play, Vicki & Jack looked certain to take the title after hitting their approach shot into the 17th green close.  Cassidy played her approach to about 30 feet, leaving her partner Will with a difficult and treacherous putt across the slope towards the hole.  With typical youthful exuberance, Will casually proceeded to bomb the putt for birdie, leaving the Hynes pairing with a now tricky putt to win the match – they missed and the match went to the 18th hole.

Cassidy struck her drive towards the water hazard, luckily coming up short of being wet, whilst Vicki played a steady drive down the left side away from any trouble.  Jack carefully played his second shot, positioning it perfectly in the middle of the fairway, approximately 70 metres out from the green.  Meanwhile, faced with a terrible lie sitting in thick grass, Will struggled to make clean contact and the ball got caught up in reeds immediately in front of him, resulting in a penalty drop.  Cassidy played their fourth shot to about 80 metres from the green, and Will overcooked the shot into the green finishing in the hollow at the rear.

Faced with one of the most difficult pin placements on the 18th green, Vicki lined up her shot into the green, and after Jack assisted his mum with her alignment, Vicki executed what could only be described as the perfect shot, landing just short of the green, kicking on straight, rolling up and over the right side ridge and settling only a few feet from the hole – A rousing applause was heard from the 40 or so spectators on the clubhouse balcony.

After Cassidy chipped to 15 feet, Will drained the putt, leaving Jack with the simple task of rolling the putt in for a birdie four (nett 3) and taking out the 2012 Owen Whitford Trophy.

A special thank you to the Whitford family for their continued support of this great event, and even bigger thank you to Club member, Mark Fleer, from The Tool Chrome Company, who kindly sponsored the 2012 event.  Without supporters such as Mark, these events could not be the successful events we have seen over the last few years.
