Big Win Over Southern for Simpson Cup Team

Report by Geoff Attenborough
Team Manager

In a danger game against Southern on their home course Mt Compass Golf Club our Simpson Cup team came away with a very solid 6.5 matches to 0.5 win.

Even though the score line looks convincing, the result came down to 1 match finishing on the17th hole and 3 matches at the 18th so the result could have been very different.

Team captain Anthony Olsen at 7 continued his great form with a 2/1 win against a determined opponent but Anthony’s experience and determination proved the difference in a crucial match.

Ben Layton playing at 6 gained control after a slow start to be 3up after 9 holes, getting out to a 5 hole lead after 12, eventually winning his match 5/3.

Josh Hayes at 5 had very tough battle winning his match 1up. This match was of very high quality with Josh, after leading most of the day holding his composure to complete his win.

Jackson Kalz at 4 showed his never give up attitude with a hard fought halved match. Being down for almost the whole match and having a 3 hole deficit with 5 to play Jackson showed great fighting spirit to get back to square in his match.

Sam Burton playing 3 was another of our players to have a tough match completing a 1up win. With there being a 1 hole advantage maximum most of the day, this match could have gone either way. This win will be a confidence booster for Sam after a couple of early losses in the season.

Sam Earl at 2 was always in control of his game being 2up after 2 holes extending to be 5up after 6 and eventually closing out the match with a 6/5 win. Sam continues his great form being 4-under the card when he finished his match.

At 1 Lachlan Barker, after a disappointing loss last week, was out for redemption and today he certainly showed his class. Getting off to a fast start making birdie at the first 4 holes Lachy extended his lead to be 5up after 12 holes. To his opponent’s credit he made Lachy fight for his 3/2 win. Like Sam Earl this was quality golf with Lachy being 6-under the card when he finished his match.

The team regarded this match as a real danger game but our players responded with everyone taking responsibility for their match. To get the result we did is a credit to the players. With no matches next weekend we now put our focus on playing Thaxted Park at Tea Tree Gully on the 18th of June with our mantra being one week at a time and not underestimating any team.

Again thanks to all caddies for helping the players and our regular supporters for their encouragement of the team.
