Bonnar Boys Continue Winning Momentum

The Bonnar Cup team had another strong win at Royal Adelaide against The Vines winning the match 7 nil. The games started from the 14th tee in cold, blustery conditions and the Glenelg boys adapted really well to the conditions and after 7 holes, Glenelg was well ahead in all games and looked headed for the 7 nil result.

At No. 7 James Bridgen played solidly to be 4 up after 9 and went on to win 5 & 3.

Ben Winton at No. 6 was playing his first pennant match for Glenelg (having previously played Simpson Cup for Blackwood) and was consistent through the day – he was 2 up after 7, still 2 up after 11 and finished his game winning 3 & 2 – Congratulations Ben on your first pennant win for Glenelg.

Harry Burner at No. 5 got off to a flyer – he was 5 up after 7 and still 5 up after 11 – however his young opponent was playing some nice shots and won 3 of the next 4 holes to be only 2 down after 15 – but Harry played the 11th hole (the 16th hole of the game) with a nice tee shot and approach to 10 feet – his birdie putt hung on the lip but was good enough to win the hole and win his game 3 & 2.

At No. 4, Henry Duregon had a competitive game against his opponent – Henry was 2 up early and still 2 up after 12, but lost 13 and 14 (the 8th and 9th holes) to be square playing 15 (the 10th) but birdie on 10 from 25 feet, a solid par on 11 and then a great tee shot into the long par 3 12th hole and resultant holed birdie putt from 20 feet saw Henry win his game 2 & 1.

Jack Buchanan at No. 3 again showed no mercy – all square after 4 holes he birdied the 18th and 1st and also won the 2nd hole to jump to 3 up after 7 and maintained the pressure to record a 5 & 4 win.

David Hiern at No. 2 made amends for his loss last week – he birdied the 14th hole (first hole of the game) to set the tone – he then proceeded to be 6 up after 7 and maintained par golf to record a 6 & 5 win.

Frank Vucic at No. 1 hit the ball very solidly and used his power hitting to advantage – he jumped out to be 3 up after 7 and maintained the advantage through most of his game to record a solid 4 & 3 win.

Thank you to all the caddies and parents for their support to the players in the cold, blustery conditions.

Next Sunday we play Tea Tree Gully at Glenelg from 11.15am – it would be nice to see some members out supporting the lads whilst we play at home. This will be another important game where we cannot allow the complacency of playing at home to creep in – a focused, well prepared approach will be imperative.

Other results over the weekend indicate that Kooyonga and Grange will be our main competitors for a Finals spot – we are yet to play these teams, so, whilst we have had a strong start to the season, there is a lot more golf still to be played over the next 5 weeks and the challenge is there to maintain the winning momentum that has developed for the rest of the season.
