Tough Win for Simpson Cup Team

Jackson KalzReport by Geoff Attenborough
Team Manager

In very tough conditions of swirly winds and on and off rain, the Glenelg Simpson cup team fought out a tough 5 matches to 2 win against a very resilient Grange team on Sunday.

This very important victory places the team in a strong position for the remainder of the season, but we shall take it 1 week at a time as there are some tough matches coming up.

Michael Munn at no. 7 continued his good form with a strong 5/4 win. After being 3up after 6 holes Michael was never in trouble to complete a comfortable 5/4 win.

Captain Anthony Olsen at no. 6 was another to continue on his winning way with a tough 3/2 win. After being 1 down after 7 holes Anthony gained the upper hand to be 2up after 11, and was never headed after that to go on and win 3/2.

Josh Hayes at no. 5 had a tough match against an experienced Grange player winning 1up. With neither player having an advantage after 6 holes Josh gained the advantage to be 2up after 11. The lead extended out to 3up with 3 to play, after a couple of errant tee shots by Josh on the 16th and 17th holes the match was back to 1up standing on the 18th tee. Fortunately Josh calmly halved the last to complete the win.

Jackson Kalz at no. 4 was in control all of his match being 1up after 6 holes, extending out to 4up after 11 holes, and eventually winning 4/3. Jackson’s concentration and unflappable attitude is a lesson for more senior players and is reason for his consistent success.

Sam Burton playing at no. 3 had a poor start being 5 down after 6 holes. Sam fought back to be 3 down after 11, but had given away too much of an advantage, eventually losing 4/3. Sam I am sure will be keen to turn his form around with a win next match.

Sam Earl at no. 2 was another of our boys to have a tough battle all match. Being 1 down after 3 holes Sam gained the advantage to be 2up after 9. After going back to be only 1up after 16 holes Sam made an amazing win on the 17th hole. After losing his ball off the tee and his opponent in good position with his tee shot, Sam went back to the tee playing 3. Putting his second tee shot in good position Sam’s Grange opponent put his second shot into the front bunker. Sam then hit his 4th shot to 12 feet. The Grange player played his bunker shot to 15 feet above the hole and proceeded to 3 putt, with Sam holing his putt to win the hole and the match 2/1.

Lachlan Barker had a day to forget losing his match 4/3. Being 1down after 6 holes, and extending out to 4 down after 10, Lachy could not make up his deficit to eventually lose at the 15th hole.

Overall this was a good performance by the team but we are taking nothing for granted with a tough match coming up next playing Southern at their home course Fleurieu. There should be no complacency as there is a local knowledge advantage for the Southern team and they will be very keen to make their mark.

Thanks to all caddies who had a tough job in the conditions and all club members out supporting the team.
