The Glenelg Simpson Cup team travelled to The Grange Golf Club on Sunday for our second round match against Blackwood Golf Club. In perfect weather conditions our boys did not let us down with a very solid 6 matches to 1 win.
With Lachy Barker in Malaysia defending his Malaysian Amateur title we welcomed Michael Munn our experienced new member from Blackwood Golf Club into the team playing at no 7. After an even start being square after 3 holes, Michael got out to a 5 hole lead after 8. After losing 3 of the next 4 holes, going back to 2 up he steadied to eventually win 4/2. A very good debut for the team with many more wins to come.
Anthony Olsen continued on his winning way with a workmanlike 3/2 win playing at no 6. After being only 1 up after 7 holes Anthony extended his lead to be 3 up after 13 holes, to eventually close out his match at the 16th.
Ben Layton promoted up the order to no 5 after his great win last week played extremely well to win his match 5/4. Getting off to very fast start being 6 up after 7, Ben finished his match at the 14th after always being in control.
Josh Hayes at no 4 was another to continue with their great form from last week. Being 4 up after 5 holes Josh completely overwhelmed his opponent to complete an unbelievable 8/7 win. After being 5 under par in his win last week, Josh continued this form again being 5 under par for 11 holes this week. Well played Josh.
Jackson Kalz at no 3, our young Mr Cool, continued on his winning way to be too steady for his opponent winning 4/2. Can’t say any more about Jackson, he makes few mistakes and always seems in control.
Sam Burton had a tough day playing at no 2 losing his match 4/2. Sam by his own admission could have played better but credit to his opponent who played very well. At this level it is very difficult to win every match and I am sure Sam will bounce back next week.
Sam Earl at no 1, after getting off to a slow start being square after 6 holes, found his rhythm to gain a 3 hole advantage after 9. Sam was never headed from this point to go on and win this match 4/2.
Our team has now set a solid foundation for the rest of the Pennant season. We have a difficult task next week playing last year’s final opponent The Grange at home. Our boys are certainly up for the challenge and would love to see as much support as possible for this what could be season defining match.
Again as every week thanks to all caddies and supporters coming out to encourage the team.
