Glenelg’s contingent of juniors have performed well following the first two rounds of the Australian Junior Amateur Championships being held in Tasmania this week.
Lachlan Barker holds the lead with a two-round total of 6-under par to lead the Boys’ Amateur field by 2 shots, coming home strongly in his second round finishing birdie-eagle-birdie.
Jackson Kalz, who was tied in second place with Barker after round one, struggled to repeat his first round form firing a 6-over par 78. Kalz was chasing his tail after starting his second round on the 10th hole with a string of bogeys and a double, but fought back on the front nine shooting 1-under to finish in a tie for 14th place at 4-over.
Following a 1-over 73 in the first round, Brodie Whitbread shot a 5-over par 78 to be in a tie for 26th position at 6-over for the tournament. Ben Layton carded a 2-over par 74 in his second round, improving on his first round 78, to be two shots further back in a tie for 38th.
Liam Kennewell and Jack Buchanan (pictured) both fired rounds of 76, 78 to be at 10-over par for the tournament and sneak into the final 36 holes on the cutline.
Jack Tanner, Jacob Rillotta, Frank Vucic and Aaron Buchanan all had disappointing tournaments missing the cut but gaining valuable experience playing at the top level.
In the Girls’ Amateur event at nearby Devonport Golf Club, Charley Jacobs fired two rounds of 81,77, 158 to be 10-over for the tournament in 56th place, sneaking past the cutline by four shots. Emma Sutton improved in her second round firing a 9-0ver 83 but failed to make the cut.
