Glenelg vs Royal Adelaide at Kooyonga Golf Club

Glenelg 3.5 halved with Royal Adelaide 3.5

Report by Michael Noble (Team Manager)

At last, a nice day to play golf. A little sunshine breaking through light clouds at 9:15am and a light breeze gave us confidence that we could play well.

The Royal Adelaide Manager, David Tamblyn (a Glenelg member also) was not sure who he wanted to win. I suggested he tell his players to lay down today. His reply with a grin told me exactly who he wanted to win.

Most of our boys started well. The golf was of a high standard with Anthony, Sam and Matt grabbing early leads. After nine holes however, Royal Adelaide had a reasonable lead. Although Anthony was 2up, Matt 1up and Sam square, all the other were 3 down and we needed to lift.

The boys started to recover and after 14 holes, Ben, Lachlan, Mitch and Andrew had fought back all to be only one down. Sam was also 1 down now however and Matt all square. Anthony was holding strong at 3up.

Things were very close and both sets of supporters were getting jumpy. We arrived at the 16th green to find Ben was now all square. Unfortunately he lost 17 but a fabulous iron shot to 10 feet on the 18th put pressure on his opponent who was 60 feet away. He raced his first putt 8 feet past and after Ben made his par, Louis Fuller of Royal Adelaide left his own par putt just short. The match was halved.

Sam had run out of steam and went down 3/2 but is learning fast after just two games at the top level.

Lachlan had won the 17th to be all square. Both players found the 18th in regulation with nice shots to 20 feet. Good putts from both players to 3 feet saw both putts conceded for another halved match.

Anthony had kept up his solid play and finished his match 4/2 for the overall match to be one win and two halves each.

Mitch Nash had won the 16th hole and was 1up now. A half at 17 to remain that way was followed by a fine iron shot to 18. When his partner missed the green and pitched poorly, Mitch laid his putt dead to secure a 2up victory. Matt McGowan unfortunately made a couple of late bogeys to lose his match 2/1.

The game was now in the captain’s hands. Andrew was 1 down with two holes to go. He holed a 3 metre putt to win the 17th hole, much to our relief, and went all square in his match. A fabulous tee shot on 18 left him only 80 metres to the green while his opponent responded well by hitting his approach shot to 30 feet. Andrew then played a wonderful sand iron to 10 feet. The Royal Adelaide player putted to gimme range, so Andrew had a chance to win his match and the overall game. His putt came to rest on the right hand lip and stayed out. The match ending three and a half games each.

I must congratulate the boys on a wonderful fighting display after being so far down at the half way mark. They all showed a lot of character which all goes well for our last game at home this coming Sunday, and for the future.

Again thank you to our intrepid cadies and supporters. It would be great to see many more this coming weekend. [nggallery id=14]

Bonnar Cup

Glenelg vs Kooyonga at North Adelaide Golf Club

Glenelg 3 lost to Kooyonga 4

Report by Wayne Humphries (Team Manager)

A line ball game against some talented young lads from Kooyonga.

A cold, overcast day but fortunately no rain.

We welcomed Braeden Kelly in to the team for his first Bonnar Cup game following some nice wins in Junior Pennant.

It was a tight match early, but through 9 holes we were struggling in 4 of the games with a slight edge in the other 3 games.

Braeden (at No 7) played very solid golf and grabbed the initiative in the middle stages of his game to record a convincing 4 and 2 victory. Braeden was very calm during his game: he drove the ball beautifully and played some very nice touch shots around the greens – congratulations Braeden on your Bonnar Cup debut and a well-deserved win.

Henry Duregon (at No 6) had a close encounter all day and eventually took his game 2 and 1. This gave Glenelg a handy advantage early but we were still struggling in 4 of the games still to come.

Mat Mudford (at No 2) in his second game for the club continued on his winning form from last week. Some really strong drives, very solid long iron shots and nice touch around the greens had Mat 2up for most of his game and he went on to win 3 and 1.

In the other 4 games the Kooyonga boys were just too strong, playing close to par golf or better.

The other results were as follows:

Mark McDonald (at No 1) lost 5/3

James Brown (at No 3) lost 6/4

Sam Laslett (at No 4) lost 8/7

John Noble (at No 5) lost 5/4

Thank you again to the caddies for their support to their players and to the family members who were present to urge the Glenelg players on – that support continues to be greatly appreciated.
