No. 2 Jack Leonard def Sean Park 4/3

No. 3 Josh Hayes lost to Sudeera Botejue 1 down

No. 5 Zac Bray def Adam Husdell 4/3

No. 6 Mick Phillips def Jacin Cook 2 up

No. 7 Nick Wake def John Creasey 5/4.

Playing on your home course is obviously an advantage but it can also raise expectations.  A win in this match would also be vital to reaching the semi-finals.  After last week’s disappointing loss we did some soul searching during the week and the players responded in an excellent manner to achieve a solid 6 -1 win.

At no. 1 Kade Brant was up against former Glenelg member Ben Hallam.  In a high quality match with many birdies Kade got the upper hand early on the back nine with 4 birdies in a row to be 3 up through 12.  Another birdie on the 14th took the lead out to 4.  Ben then birdied the next two holes to keep the match alive but a half on 17 saw Kade take the win.

Jack Leonard returned to the winners circle with a comfortable win over Sean Park.  The match was close on the front nine but Jack pulled away early on the back nine to reach 4 up through 13.  He lost the 14th but won the 15th to finish the match.

Josh Hayes had his colours lowered for the first time this season in a very close match against Sudeera Botejue.  Josh got out to a 2 up lead after the 11th but by the 14th he found himself 1 down and then 2 down after 16.  He made a great par into the wind on 17 to get back to one down with a chance to win the 18th to halve the match.  However both players parred the last.

Michael Munn’s match with Jimmy Luo was close all day.  Michael never surrendered the lead at any stage with the biggest margin being 2 holes after 13 and 16.  His opponent made an excellent par at 17 to reduce the margin to 1 hole but they would go on to halve the last with pars giving Michael a hard earned win.

At no. 5 Zac Bray held sway all day.  He was two up at the turn and then won the 10th to go 3 up.  A miraculous half on the 13th included a left handed shot and he followed that up with a win on the 15th to close out an excellent win.

In a similar vein Mick Phillips got off to a good start to be 3 up through 7 holes.  However the margin was reduced to 2 holes through 11 and then just one after the 16th.  The 17th was halved and a solid par up the last was enough to win the hole to take the win 2 up.

The evergreen Nick Wake got off to a flyer in his match against John Creasey reaching 4 up after 6 holes before going on to close out the match on the 14th 5/4.

would like to thank everyone involved in the hosting of a home pennant match especially with such an early start of 7.15 just after daybreak.  From Shane and Ryan who had the pro shop open in the dark to the rules officials who gave up a big portion of their day.  And a special thank you to Tim Warren and his course team.  The course was presented in outstanding condition with many compliments received on the changes.  A number of staff were working in the dark to cut and roll the greens and set the tee and hole locations.  Many thanks.

The win takes us back into the top four with 2 minor rounds remaining as per the pennant table:

This week we take on Thaxted Park at Kooyonga from 11.30 am.

Round 3 | 16th March
Location: Glenelg | vs The Grange

Jill Hodge halved with Millie Whinney

Zoe Manton lost to Steph Keylock 3/1

Maiya Jakupec lost to Elyse Kozlovic 8/7

Bec Hardy defeated Louise Glennon 3/2

Grace Ferrier lost to Sarah Sanders 2/1

On what could only be described as challenging conditions Grange were to good for us winning 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

At number 5 Grace had a good battle with her opponent, being only 1 down through 13 but unfortunately lost 2/1.

Bec again played strong, solid golf, never being down in her match and she had a good win 3/2. Well played Bec.

Maiya had a disappointing day, not performing to her usual high standards. She went down early in her match and was unable to turn things around.

Zoe also had a tight match. She was square after the 11th, then had some trouble on 13 and 16 to lose 3/1.

Jill played great golf in the strong wind. She birdied the 5th to get back to square and then was never more than 1 down. She got to 1 up after 13 but a ball in the water on 16 put her back to square. Jill lost 17 after putting her drive in the water. Her opponent returned favour on 18 putting her ball in the water. Jill then played a fantastic fairway bunker shot to 6 feet and sunk the putt for birdie, squaring the match. A tremendous effort.

Thanks again to the caddies, Cathy, Nick, Victor, Nat and Hayden.

We have a bye this week. Our next match is 30th March at Blackwood, teeing off at 0730.

Round 5 | 16th March
Location: Tea Tree Gully | vs Tea Tree Gully

After last week being called off due to the heat policy, this week we played Blackwood at Blackwood in Round 5.  We played nice and early and thankfully missed most of the forecast wind and rain.  Unfortunately this week we chalked up a 4/1 loss but there were some really close games played and they came down to the wire.

In the top spot was Indie Danger vs Charlie Fowlie.  Indie is playing some generally solid golf and consistently chalking up some good wins, and this week was no different finishing in a 5/4 victory.  On the 19th hole Indie drained and absolute monster 50 foot putt to halve the hole.  Another stand out shot was on the 12th left side rough threw and absolute dart in to the green for his second shot finishing maybe 8 foot or so from the pin.

Cooper Lessue was in the second spot vs Harry Dyson.  This was a super close battle being square, up 1, square, up 1, finishing at up 2 at the turn, and Cooper then got to 3 up on the 10th after a shot from 160m out to 4 foot scoring a great birdie. Unfortunately from here on in Harry hit some bomb drives and Coop ended up losing the next 5 holes straight however he kept his head and managed to hold it at -2 ending on the 17th down 2/1.

Dail Botha Vs Sam Glasson was the third game of the day.  This would not be a day of good form for Dail unfortunately taking a fast dive to -4 after 4 holes.  Dail clawed it back to -2 and the game hovered between -2 and -3 all the way to the end finishing on the 15th down 4/3.  Dail said he couldn’t really think of a stand out shot he played, but i think his tenacity and attitude to keep giving it all in the face of a less than desired game result speaks volumes and should be applauded.

Mia Chinner in her second outing for Sharp Cup played in the 4th spot vs Henry Dunk.  Mia took the lead on the 1st and was either square or +1 right through past the turn up until the 14th hole.  Going in to the 18th hole at -1 hoping for a squared round unfortunately ended in a 2 down result.  A couple of putts didnt quite fall for a couple of birdies and that really is the only difference in this game being a win or a loss.  Mia played some very competant and competitive golf and should not be disheartened by this loss at all.  Mia said her best shot was on the 12th where she hit an amazing 3 wood from 135m out finishing 10 foot from the hole.

Levi Ashton came in to Sharp Cup for the first time this week vs Carter Bolt in the 5th spot.  Levi lost a couple of holes early to drop to -2 after 3 holes, but turned it around to be +1 at the turn.  Levi stayed up or square right through until the 14th and 15th where he was -2 having to fight to stay in it.  Winning the 16th brought him back to just -1 where it remained to the end of the 18th. Definitely a valient effort for his first foray into Sharp Cup.   Levi said his wedge shot on the 12th from 55m out to 3 foot was his best shot of the day.

The Sharp Cup team is currently sitting in 4th spot on the table behind Tea Tree Gully, Royal Adelaide and The Grange.  Next week we take on the leaders at Willunga.

Go Team!!

Round 5 | 16th March
Location: Westward Ho | vs Westward Ho

The stage was set for an exciting showdown at The Pat as our Junior Div 2 team took on the home team, Westward Ho, for Round 6. Despite the cloudy skies and a powerful breeze that added an extra layer of challenge to the competition, our team showed incredible heart and determination throughout the match.

Damia Muadz, returning from injury and stepping in as a reserve player, was ready to make her mark. Facing William Long, Damia found herself down after the first three holes but refused to back down. With her fighting spirit shining through, she battled her way back to all square by hole 8. It was a back-and-forth contest, neck-and-neck all the way, but she was narrowly defeated 2/1 on hole 17. It was a tough loss, but Damia’s resilience was inspiring to watch.

Next, Ethan Collette played in the No. 5 spot against Isabella Goldfinch. Ethan had a slower start but quickly regained his focus and confidence by hole 7. His resilience and determination were on full display, but despite his best efforts, he lost 4/3. Ethan’s ability to keep his head in the game despite early struggles showed the true grit of a competitor.

At No. 4, Ben Yin faced the experienced Brad Atkinson in what turned out to be a thrilling, rollercoaster match. Ben gave it his all, and every hole seemed like a new opportunity. Although he ultimately came up short on hole 16, losing 3/2, Ben’s performance was a testament to his grit and drive.

Cade Barnes was up next, determined to continue his strong performances. Facing Victor Duval, Cade found himself battling the powerful winds that made the course even more challenging. Despite his efforts, Cade lost 6/4, but his perseverance throughout the match was impressive and showed the mental strength needed to face adversity.

Our captain, Gareth Thien, took on Arthur Chalienxb in the No. 2 spot. After a solid start, Gareth found himself 2 down after 6 holes but never stopped fighting. With the wind making things even more difficult, Gareth gave it his all, but ultimately lost 6/5. His leadership and determination were evident throughout, and he kept his head high despite the challenges.

Finally, Ava Strazdins, our No. 1 player, faced a tense match against Ed Kalogerias. The match was tight from start to finish, with both players exchanging blows and keeping the score close. Ava dug deep and fought back to 1 down by hole 17, but despite her valiant efforts, she narrowly lost 1 down after a short putt on hole 18. Ava’s determination and strategic thinking kept us all on the edge of our seats.

Although the final scoreline read 5-0 in favor of Westward Ho, there is so much pride to be taken from this performance. Our team exhibited incredible character, resilience, and sportsmanship. Every player showed the heart of a true competitor, battling through tough conditions and challenges to give their best.

A massive thank you goes out to all the parents for their unwavering support. While we didn’t come out on top this time, our team’s drive and motivation are stronger than ever, and we are ready to bounce back even stronger in the next round.

Round 5 | 16th March
Location: Tea Tree Gully | vs Tea Tree Gully

The Bonnar team travelled North last Sunday to battle Tea Tree Gully on their home track.  With regulars Dave Brand & Simon Gallie unavailable we welcomed back Matt Jacquier from Simpson Cup duties and Anthony Wang for his first representative game this season.

Hitting off at 7:15 we set out confidently, hoping to build on our last two wins. Unfortunately, TTG at home was always going to be tough and some mixed results had us just fall short in the end.

Playing the No.7 match, Anthony Wang took on a very experienced opponent playing at home, fought hard all day but eventually lost 4&3.

Black Wilby, playing the No.6 match, struggled to find the form of last week and returned our second loss 5&4.

Desperately unlucky last week, Ben Winton then set out in the No.5 match and in a quality game succumbed to a 7 metre birdie putt on the last to finish 1 down. We all know how hard Ben works on his game and look forward to a couple of breaks coming his way to have him return to his winning ways.

Fletch Ryan, playing the No.4 match, maintained a great standard of play throughout to earn a valuable victory 2up.

At No.3, Harry Edwards then continued his season’s great (undefeated) form with a hard earned 2&1 victory.

Unfortunately, the No. 2 match had Matt Jacquier behind early, came back but eventually went down 4&3 handing TTG their 4th match and the win.

At No.1, Will Starkey played some great golf to finish the day with a stellar 5&3 win.

The final result 4 games to 3 for TTG.

Playing TTG at home is never easy and proved too much for the Bonnar group on Sunday.  We now sit 4th on the ladder and look forward to taking on Westward Ho on the Grange East championship layout at 10:10 next Sunday.

Thanks as always to the caddies Darryn Conway, Steve Jacquier, Gary Edwards, John Ferrier, Dave Rosie, Keith Barnard and James Bridgen.

Round 3 | 16th March
Location: GLENELG | vs Kooyonga

Result: Glenelg 5 – 0 Kooyonga

March seems to be serving up extraordinary weather conditions for the Pike Cup women. Sunday our tee time was just after midday, and as we hit off so did the wind!

Strong gusts of wind made the challenge of negotiating direction and distance of each shot, a task to be commended by all our players.

Match highlights:

No 1 player: Sarah Crocker led all day and her winning shot on the 16th was beautiful to watch with the ball landing within 2 meters of the hole. Sarah provided a winning score of 4/2.

No 2 player: Bec Hughes was commanding in her approach shots.  The newly formed 17th hole gave her opponent a taste of the difficulty and precision required, where Bec provided a win of 2/1.

No 3 player: Tonia Ross won 5/3 on a day of punishing conditions. Tonia’s determination and resolve saw steady and solid shots, when it could have been easy to take risks.

No 4 player: Lou Pike was calm and constant. Her caddy providing the ever-helpful assistance, ensuring Lou was playing all her best shots. She won 4/2.

No 5 player: Sam White joined the team to bring a 6/4 win at the 14th  hole. Sam struck the ball with determination and grit.

The assistance of the all the caddies is really appreciated, ensuring the right clubs are selected and the positive thoughts are included.  Ruth, Cath, Annabel, Nick and Hanna, thank you all so much.

As I look at the 3rd week of the competition and note we are now leading the Pike Cup A2 Women who are playing from all over the metropolitan area, I would like to say, ‘well done ladies!’  We now need to remain focused and motivated to keep going!

Next Sunday we play at The Grange at 8:40am against Southern. Please let the weather gods be kind to us all!

Go Pikies!

Round 5 | 17th March
Location: The Vines | vs The Vines

It wasn’t a very good day for our Glenelg girls losing 5 to 0 to The Vines on their home course.

Glenelg were up three matches to two after six holes but unfortunately went downhill from there.

Jacqui Burke playing at number 5 was up or square all day but her opponent won the sixteenth and seventeenth to lose 2/1.

Wendy Vaughan didn’t have her best day but fought gallantly, but succumbed to her opponents knowledge of the tricky Vines Course losing 7/6.

Fiona Eblen had a good start being 2 up after five holes but was 1 down after nine.  Then she lost the next three holes but with a birdie at the 14th hole went back to 2 down.  But she lost the 15th and 16th to lose 4/2.

Sue Raggatt began her round to be one down after 3 holes but went to 4 down after the ninth hole with her opponent having a better grasp of the greens.   Sue eventually finished losing 7/5.

Jo Ricourt started very well being two up after seven holes but was square after nine holes.  Once again her Vines opponent was able to take advantage of local knowledge with Jo eventually losing 4/3.

Thank you to our cheer squad, Cathy Symons, Jo Rawson and Kathryn Kleinschmidt.  A big thank you to our caddies, Jill Gehling, Cathy Johnston, Nick Eblen, Rory Vaughan and Lou Pike.  The girls appreciated your guidance and strength needed to go up and down the hills.
