This year pennant golf has moved from winter to summer/autumn and the players will certainly appreciate the warmer weather and the best course conditions.  There has been one major change to our squad from last year with Harry Burner having moved to the country.  Coming into the team to make his Simpson Cup debut was Matt Jacquier.  Matt has played Bonnar Cup for several years and has had some excellent recent form.

As usual in all of our recent matches against Kooyonga it was a closely run affair.  We had a slight edge early but moving into the back nine Kooyonga had their nose in front.  We were able to edge ahead towards the end and it looked like we might just scrape in with the win or at least a tie.  However there was a sting in the tail on the final hole of the final match that unfortunately didn’t go our way.

Matt Jacquier went out first at no.7 and had his hands full against the ever-reliable Geoff Brennan.  He was 2 down at the turn and Geoff quickly closed out the match being about 3 under par for the 14 holes played!

Mick Phillips went out next and was on the back foot early to be 2 down at the turn.  However he was able to fight back on the back nine and get back to square after 14.  He edged one ahead on the 17th and just needed to halve the par 4 last to secure the win.  However he went one better with a sensational second shot that set up a short birdie putt that he duly made to win the hole.

Nick Wake got off to a good start to be 2 up through 3 holes.  However the match was back to square after 6 holes and his opponent was starting to get on top.  By the 12th hole Nick was 3 down with the match closing out on the 15th hole.

At no. 4 Michael Munn was up against Kooyonga’s young gun Malachy Marshall, the recent winner of the SA Junior Amateur.  Michael quickly found himself under pressure to be 3 down after 4 holes.  However he was able to steady the ship and get back to 1 down by the 11th which remained the score after 16.  Unfortunately a loss on the 17th saw Malachy take the win.

At no. 3 Josh Hayes had a day out against one of our former members Jackson Kalz.  Josh got off to an excellent start to be 4 up at the turn and then 6 up after 11 before winning the match after 13 holes.  This was a great boost for Josh who is coming back to golf after an injury lay-off.

At no. 2 our own young gun Jack Leonard got off to a quick start against Freddie Cassell with a birdie on the opening hole. While he didn’t have it all his own way he was never headed mostly holding a 1 or 2 hole lead throughout the day.  A win on the 17th hole secured his victory.

So at this stage the score is 3-3 with just Kade Bryant left on course in the no. 1 match against Kyle Hater.  The match was tight all day with both players holding the lead at some stage.  Kade was 1 down at the turn but then won the next 2 holes to go 1 up.  He edged further ahead to 2 up through 15 but Kyle wasn’t done with yet.  At the par 4 16TH Kyle all but drove the green setting up a chip and putt birdie to win the hole.  Kade lost 17 after his approach went over the back of the green setting up a near impossible chip down the slope.  So it was all to play for down the par 4 last.  Kyle’s tee shot went way right into the rough near the adjacent fairway but he drew a good lie.  Kade’s tee shot just missed the right edge of the fairway but he had to punch a low shot under tree branches which ran through the green into the back bunker.  Kyle then hit probably the shot of the day over the trees off the hard pan to the hill at the back of the green where it then rolled all the way back down the green to settle about 4 feet from the pin.  Kade had a very hard bunker shot straight down the slope with little chance of getting it close which he played well but was unable to save his par.  Kyle then rolled in his birdie putt to take the win and secure the overall match for Kooyonga.

All in all a tough way for us to start the season but it shows we are competitive against the reigning champion and that Kooyonga will again be a threat to all of the other teams.  Thanks to the caddies and supporters.  A big thank you to our pennant sponsors Bradley Trade Services, Chess Moving and Vault Mobile Self Storage.  We looked resplendent in our new summer uniforms!

This week there are no matches as the weekend is cleared for LIV Golf.  Our next match is on 23 February at The Vines against Grange from 9.30 am.

Glenelg | 1st Tee at 11.15am

Round 1 of the Sharp Cup kicked off at home against Royal Adelaide this week. Both teams were strong and all the matches were good viewing. Dail Botha played against Jordan Cranwell first up. After a slow start unfortunately going down the first 4 holes, at the end of the 15th hole the tally was still the same, showing that Dail stuck with Jordan, just couldn’t close the gap, ending 4 down 3 to play. Next up was Cooper Lessue playing Angus Norcock in an exciting and close battle which seen these two boys stay very close to square all day, going in to the 18th down 1 and needing to win the hole for a halved match. Unfortunately the game ended down 2. Indie Danger vs Billy White was the next match up. Billy took a fast lead, but Indie was slowly pulling it back on the back 9, however ended the game down 3 with 2 to play. Grace Ferrier was cool as a cucumber as she played a solid game against Seth Tympco, leading from the start to the finish in yet another closely matched game winning 2 up 1 to play. Last up was Anthony Wang playing Louis Antell. This match remained close all day with a bit of too and fro on the leader through the game, however Anthony clinched the win on the 16th 3 up 2 to play. Overall we lost the round 3 games to 2. Our team all showed great strength and determination in some very tough and closely matched games that could have gone either way. Fantastic effort!!! See you all back inspired and hungry for a win in a fortnight after LIV golf.

Junior Div 2 Round 1 – Glenelg vs Royal Adelaide

First Round Victory Against Royal Adelaide

Our season kicked off with an exciting first round at home, where we faced off against the Royal Adelaide team. The weather was perfect—mild and breezy—and our team was the first to tee off from hole 10.

Cade Barnes, a rookie for our Div 2 team, played as a reserve against Adele Wang. Cade came out with confidence, quickly building a strong lead of 6-up after the first 9 holes. Although he lost a few holes on the back nine, his composure kept him in control, and he secured a 2/1 victory.

Jayden McGrath, our No. 5 player this week, took on Kate Cao. Jayden came to play with one focus—getting a point for the team. He got off to a blazing start, leading 4-up after the first 6 holes. His game was on fire, and he finished with a dominant 5/4 win at the 19th hole.

Levi Ashton was up next in the No. 4 spot, facing Sam Timson. One of our most experienced players, Levi wasted no time making his mark. On hole 11, he nailed a remarkable bunker shot, landing just a foot from the pin and saving par. He maintained his lead throughout the match and clinched a 4/2 victory on hole 5.

Ava Strazdins, playing at No. 3, faced off against Josh Antell. The match was closely contested, with Ava trailing by 2-down after playing 10 holes. But she dug deep, fought back, and managed to square the game on the last hole, earning half a point for the team.

Our No. 2 this week, Mia Chinner, took on Mason Holder. Mia started strong, winning hole 10, but soon found herself 5-down after 10 holes. With a positive mindset and incredible determination, she fought back with a birdie on hole 2, cutting the deficit to 4-down. Mia kept the pressure on, eventually bringing the score down to 2-down, but Mason found his rhythm and finished strong, securing a 3/2 win at hole 5.

At this point, with two wins, a square, and one loss, our team needed just half a point to seal the victory. Zack Goers, our captain and No. 1 player, took on J Sung Park in what turned into a nail-biting match. The score was all square after hole 14. Zack briefly gained the lead on hole 5, but J Sung Park fought back, squaring the match again on hole 6. On the final hole, it came down to a 5-foot putt for Zack to halve the match—and with nerves of steel, he made it, securing a 3-2 win for our team.

A fantastic performance from the team in our first match of the season, showing great character and resilience under pressure. A special thank you to Ben Yin for caddying for Mia, and to our loyal supporters, Gareth and Damia!

Round 1 | 9th February
Glenelg | 1st Tee at 7.15am

Round one had us facing last year’s premiers at home. We had a strong team in and high expectations on our 17 hole track with a number of renovated holes not yet seen by our opponents. Matches were evenly balanced after 8 holes but unfortunately the story of the back 9 were a number of close fought games just getting away from us late in the day with RAGC eventually winning 5 1/2 matches to 1 1/2. With 4 results 1 down or square we were closer than the final score line suggests.

Kyle Feltus set us off at no. 7. Kyle’s match featured great ball striking from both players but the putts just would not drop for Glenelg. 2 down after 8 Kyle finished on the 14th going down 5&4.

Harry Edwards playing no.6 got off to a great start to be 2 up after 8 and then produced a solid back 9 to finish 2 up.

Fletcher Ryan encountered a quality opponent at no. 5 and fought hard all day, was square after 8 and eventually lost a tight struggle 1 down on the last.

Unfortunately this is how the next three matches also played out.

Simon Gallie, making a welcome return to Bonnar after a couple of years, played the no. 4 match and had a very tough assignment. Some great shot making had him 2 up after 8 but the high quality golf from his opponent kept coming and Simon eventually did well to finish his match square.

Evergreen Ben Winton, playing no. 3, also had a very experienced, quality opponent to contend with – halving the 19th with birdies and many other holes at par Ben was 2 down after 8 but hung tough to finish 1 down on the 18th.

Will Starkey at no. 2 also had a tough assignment and found himself 4 down after 8 but rallied on the back 9 to eventually loose 1 down on the 18th.

Finally, Dave Brand had his hands full from the outset playing the no. 1 match against an experienced opponent very familiar with the Glenelg layout. A hard fought front 8 had Dave 1 down but some some high quality golf got the better of him on the back 9 eventually going down 6&4.

Our first Summer pennant match was a great hit out for the boys and we competed well with the RAGC group who will be setting the standard in Bonnar this year. We come away

from the defeat knowing that the 4 matches that did not quite go our way can be addressed with some hard work by this very committed and enthusiastic group. We look forward to a great season and, all going to plan, meeting up with RAGC in the finals.
