Round 2 | 23rd February
Location: The Vines | 1st Tee, 9.30am vs The Grange

Glenelg 5 ½ def The Grange 1 ½

No. 1 Kade Bryant halved with Ross Steedman

No. 2 Jack Leonard def Darren Baynes 3/2

No. 3 Josh Hayes def Andrew Nakone 4/3

No. 4 Michael Munn def Matt Wilson 2 up

No. 5 Nick Wake def Michael Coleman 3/1

No. 6 Matt Jacquier def Alan Xin 1 up

No. 7 Mick Phillips lost to Mark Demasi 2/1

After the disappointment of the opening round loss to Kooyonga it was vital that we responded in a positive way against a strong Grange team.  The players certainly did that and delivered a strong performance to defeat Grange at The Vines.

Mick Phillips at no. 7 went out first against fellow veteran Mark Demasi.  Despite playing some solid golf Mick was unable to get in front and trailed by one or two holes for most of the day.

At no. 6 Matt Jacquier recorded his first Simpson Cup win against young Alan Xin.  The match was close all day but Matt gout out to lead 2 up through 14 holes.  Alan fought back and they went down the difficult par 4 last hole all square.  Matt hit his best drive of the day which set up a good wedge into the green.  Alan couldn’t reach the green for two and made 5 leaving Matt with two putts to win the match.

Nick Wake got off to a slow start against Michael Wilson to be 2 down early however he eventually slipped into gear and won a string of holes to be 3 up after 10.  He held that margin until the match finished on 17.

Michael Munn got off to a slow start against Matt Wilson.  He was 2 down early and 3 down after 12 and things were looking grim!  However he managed to win 5 of the last 6 holes including 3 birdies to achieve an outstanding win.

Josh Hayes continued his good form in his win over Andrew Nakone.  He was largely untroubled getting off to a good start to be 4 up at the turn and going on to win comfortably.

Jack Leonard also continued his good form in his match against Darren Baynes. He took the lead with a birdie on the third hole and never looked back.  Consecutive birdies on 12 and 13 took his lead to 3 up before closing out the match on the 16th.

In the top match Kade Bryant had his hands full in a quality match against Ross Steedman.  Kade had the best of the front nine being 2 up through 8 and 1 up at the turn.  He lost 10 but regained the lead with a birdie on 13.  Ross then won the next two holes to take the lead but Kade squared things up on the 16th.  Both players had a good look at birdie on the 17th but were unable to convert.  On 18 Kade just missed the fairway to the right.  Ross carved his tee shot way right.  He had to chip out on to the second and eventually made a good up and down for bogey.  Kade had a slightly restricted swing and punched out into the front left bunker.  He hit a solid bunker shot but was unable to make the putt and had to settle for the half.

After two rounds this is the table:

Thanks to the caddies and supporters.  A big thank you to our pennant sponsors Bradley Trade Services, Chess Moving and Vault Mobile Self Storage.

Round 2 | 23rd February
Location: Royal Adelaide | 1st Tee, 11.25am vs The Vines

Round 2 of the Sharp Cup was held at Royal Adelaide vs The Vines. At 4 holes in all games were squared bar Kyle who was 1 up.  By the end of the front 9 we were 3 games up and 2 were still squared.  Those 3 games were all poised for victory on the 15th and it was fantastic to see the camaraderie of all the players at this point. I asked each player at the end of their match what was their best shot or part of their game for the day.

Daily Botha vs James Hastie was first to finish on the 15th hole 5 up with 4 to play.  Dail said his best shot was sinking a 15+ metre putt on the 7th hole to save the hole and keep it to a half.

Cooper Lessue vs Emma Hastie was the next match to finish on the 15th hole 5 up with 4 to play.  Cooper said his drive on the 12th hole, a 200 metre par 3, that ended 3 foot from the hole was his best shot of the day.

Grace Ferrier vs Ollie Nobbs came through the 15th where she was 4 up 4 to play and finished her game next on the 16th hole 5 up with 3 to play.  Grace said her drives for the last few holes were really going well, but her best shot was on the 12th hitting a 5 wood 165m into the wind onto the green.

Kyle Feltus vs Harry Percy also closed out his win on the 15th hole 6 up 4 to play. I thought Kyle’s best shot was going to be his 340 metre drive on the 5th to 40 metres out, however this was then surpassed on the 6th with an impressive 15ish metre chip in, over a bunker downhill on a tight lie.

Indie Danger vs Aiden Fitzgerald was a tight match all day.  Indie had made it to 2 up after 6, then was back to square by the end of the 9th.  Plus 1 again on the 10th soon went back to square on the 11th.  By the 15th things were still neck and neck and as everyone finished their matches the team rallied behind Indie for the rest of his match. On the 18th in a nail biting finish, Aidan’s putt for birdie that would have sealed the win ran in the hole, around and popped back out the side to sit on the edge finishing in a halved match.  Indie said his best shot was definitely his 326 metre drive on the 17th.

A fantastic win this week and it was especially good to see the whole team walking together supporting each other.  See you all next week!

Round 2 | 23rd February
Location: Royal Adelaide | 1st Tee, 1.45pm vs The Vines

The stage was set for an exciting showdown at Royal Adelaide Golf Club as our Junior Div 2 team took on The Vines for Round 2. The weather was ideal—sunny with a strong breeze—which added an extra challenge to the competition. Our team had the honor of teeing off on the 1st hole, and though we faced tough opponents, the spirit and resilience of our players were evident throughout the match.

Cade Barnes stepped in as a reserve player and was ready to make his mark. After a confident win in Round 1, he continued his momentum, going head-to-head with Isaac Mayne. Though Cade had to chase Isaac for much of the match, his determination paid off. In the end, his relentless effort saw him clinch a 2-up victory, showing impressive resilience on the final holes.

Next up, Ethan Collette made his pennant debut at No. 5, taking on Harrison Steel. Ethan started strong, battling hard to keep the match all square after the first 6 holes. Unfortunately, Harrison found his rhythm and pulled ahead, with Ethan ultimately falling 7/5. Despite the loss, Ethan’s courage and tenacity throughout the match showed promise for the future.

At No. 4, Gareth Thien took on experienced opponent Reid Coleman. Gareth wasted no time establishing his dominance, going 2-up after the first 4 holes. However, Reid wasn’t to be outdone, making a stunning comeback to eventually win 7/5. Gareth’s early confidence was evident, and despite the loss, his game remained strong and composed throughout.

Then came Ava Strazdins, who was determined to claim her first win of the season. After a squared match in Round 1, Ava faced Tasman Barbour with fire in her eyes. Leading 4-up after just 5 holes, Ava’s consistent hitting and unwavering focus led her to a well-earned 5/3 victory, marking a milestone in her journey this season.

Our captain, Mia Chinner, playing in the No. 2 spot, faced a tough challenge in Joshua Lessue. After a solid start, Mia found herself 2-down by hole 10. But this didn’t deter her. With incredible determination, she fought back to square the match on hole 16 and then went on to win the final two holes, securing a 2-up victory and her first win of the season. Mia’s grit and leadership shone through as she demonstrated why she’s our captain.

Finally, our No. 1 player, Zac Goers, faced Samuel Lyon in a battle of nerves and strategy. The match was neck-and-neck through the first 9 holes, but Samuel seized the advantage on hole 10. Despite Zac’s determined efforts to rally back, Samuel’s steady play saw him through, and Zac ultimately fell 4/3. Even in defeat, Zac’s sportsmanship and fight were a highlight of the day.

While the final tally saw us losing 2 to 3 to The Vines, it was clear that our team displayed exceptional character, sportsmanship, and resilience. We want to extend our thanks to all the parents for their ongoing support. We may not have come out on top this round, but we’re motivated and ready to bounce back stronger in the next.

Onward to Round 3—let’s bring the fight!

Round 2 | 23rd February
Location: Royal Adelaide | 1st Tee, 8.20am vs The Vines

Celebrating their centenary year and, hot off a big win in Round one, The Vines were always going to be a competitive unit when we faced them at RAGC on Sunday morning.

Perfect conditions greeted the players for an 8:20 hit off and early scores soon showed we were in for a battle.

A 2 to 3 club breeze then developed to test all players on RA’s championship layout.

To their great credit, our boys sustained a high level of play into the back 9 and came away with a very encouraging 5 matches to 2 win.

Leading us out at No.7, the in form Harry Edwards weathered strong competition early to come away with a 3&1 victory.

Fletch Ryan at No.6 also found the going tough early, settled himself down with a great iron into a 2/3 club breeze on the 7th and went on to deliver a valuable half for the team on the 18th.

At No.5 Simon Gallie was also calling on his years of experience throughout with memorable irons into the tough 16th and 17th setting up birdies on each and a great 2&1 victory.

Ben Winton battled hard all day in the No.4 match but could not quit bring his recent form to the game and eventually went down 3&1. We all look forward to Ben bouncing back next week.

Will Starkey, in the No.3 match, saw a good deal of the course but eventually returned a great 2 up victory.

Then, at No.2, Dave Brand, returned one of the rounds of the day for a great 4&3 win.

In the No.1 match Zac Bray fought hard all day to return a well deserved half with a telling ‘Sandy’ 4 on the 18th.

Thanks to the caddies Jack Tanner, Dave Welling, Dave Rosie, Keith Barnard & Leanne Edwards and to RA for hosting players for a Friday practice match.

We now turn our attention to a double header with the Simpson up boys when we take on The Grange at Thaxted Park next week.
