Jack Buchanan won his first event as a professional with victory in the $250,000 WA PGA Championship at Kalgoorlie on Sunday. Jack compiled rounds of 71, 66, 68,66 = 271 to finish regulation play tied on 17 under with Jordan Doull. The first playoff hole on the par 5 18th was halved in birdies after Jordan holed a long putt leaving Jack to make his putt from about 8 feet. Back to the 18th for the second playoff hole Jordan was in trouble off the tee and had to chip out. He reached the greenside bunker for 3 whilst Jack was in the same bunker for two. Jack was first away and came out to 10 feet. Jordan got his close but the best he could make was 5. Jack then calmly knocked his putt in for birdie and the win!
This is an outstanding result for Jack who is still in his first year as a professional aged just 22. It is only his second event as a full tour member having played a number of events last year on invitations. He obtained his card at Tour School in April where he finished 12th. He then headed north for the winter where he played 4 events on the Tartan Tour in Scotland with best finishes of second and third. He also played in regional qualifying for the Open Championship where he progressed through to final qualifying after a 67. With the win Jack banks $45,000 and moves to the top of the Order of Merit after two events. As a tournament winner he will now gain starts in the Australian PGA and Australian Open in November.
This week the tour moves on to Mandurah south of Perth for the $175,000 WA Open. Jack Tanner will be looking to make the field after playing in pre-qualifying today (Monday).
On the amateur front, Kade Bryant will be in Queensland this week playing in the Keperra Bowl from 15-18 October. This is a significant event played over 72 holes with World Amateur Golf Ranking status.
This week also sees the Australian Senior Amateur being held at The Links Lady Bay over 54 holes. Glenelg will be represented by Nick Wake, John Keogh, Christine Trimmer and Tonia Ross. Good luck everyone.
