Simpson Cup Report – Round 2 – Sun 7 May 2023
Glenelg v Kooyonga at Thaxted Park (10th tee)
We went into the match against the reigning champions without Jack Buchanan and Kade Bryant who are away in Sydney playing for SA in the Interstate Series this week. This gave us the opportunity to promote Max Jericho and Mick Phillips from the Bonnar Cup team to play their first Simpson Cup matches for the club. Max is 18 years old and has joined us from Barmera. He is completing his schooling at Sacred Heart College and recently represented SA in the junior interstate series in Tasmania. Mick is an experienced pennant player who has joined us from Blackwood.
Despite our best efforts we were beaten 5 ½ to 1 ½ although the scoreline probably doesn’t reflect the closeness of the match. We probably didn’t handle the tricky greens as well as Kooyonga.
Mick Phillips went out first at no. 7 and got off to a fast start against fellow veteran Geoff Brennan. He never let up the pressure closing out a strong 7/6 win. Next up was Max Jericho against Charles Shaw. Max got off to a slow start and was quickly 4 down, a position that was maintained through 10. He then started to get his way back into the match and was 2 down with 2 to play. Both hit good tee shots into the par 3. Max needed a birdie to go down the last but his putt slipped by the hole and the match was lost 2/1.
Nick Wake was up against the long hitting Joel Durnford. He was holding his own early and was just 1 down after 10. However Joel was able to get the upper hand to beat Nick 4/3. The remaining 4 matches were all very tight which was where the match was going to be won or lost.
At no. 4 Harry Leaf-Milham was playing fellow youngster Jordan Percey. Harry was also off to a slow start being 3 down after 6. He managed to turn the match around and was 1 up after 14 then 1 down after 16. The next hole, a par 3, would prove crucial. Jordan was on the green and Harry just short. Harry secured his par leaving Jordan the chance to win the hole and the match. However he raced his putt a good 8 feet past the hole giving us hope that Harry might win the hole. However it was not to be as he holed the putt. Harry needed to win the last to square the match but Jordan made par to Harry’s bogey and the match was lost 2 down.
Michael Munn was engaged in a tight battle with his regular opponent Heath Riches with the match all square through 10. However Heath quickly turned the match around by winning the next two holes. Michael was unable to peg back the lead eventually losing 2/1. A similar story was unfolding for Matt Uebergang at no. 2 playing Joe Hodgson. For most of the day Matt was either square or 1 down. He was unable to get his nose in front ultimately losing 2/1. And finally at no. 1 Harry Burner was engaged in a tight tussle with Freddie Cassell. Harry got off to a great start to be 3 up after 5 but Freddie was able to claw his way back to square the match after 12 and it was all square as they headed down the par 4 last. Harry was just off the front of the green for 2 and made his par. Freddie was in a greenside bunker and hit a solid bunker shot leaving about 12 feet for par. He managed to hole the putt to square the match.
Thanks to the caddies Scott Kerruish, Glenn Sterrey, Emma Sutton and Wayne Humphries. Thanks also to the parents and club members who came out on a chilly day to support the team.
We have a bye this week for mother’s day before resuming on 21 May at Kooyonga against Grange from 10.10 am.

Round 2 7th May Glenelg v Regency Park at Regency Park
Round 2 and our second ‘away game’ at dawn patrol time at a course not many of our players had previously visited. We were greeted with clear skies but very cold and dewy conditions. Our guys confronted this tough assignment with great vigor and after a slow start for some, eventually we all thawed out and warmed up to hit our straps and come away with a great 6 to 1 win.
Former Pennant Player of the Year James Bridgen led us off 1st, and gradually warmed to the task and on the back 9 pulled away for a 5&3 win.
Fletch Ryan was hot early and out played his opponent from the start to win comfortably 3&2.
Matt Jacquier was down early but recovered to turn in front and powered to victory after a long birdie putt win on 14 and won 4&3.
Harry Edwards was solid early but never really got his game going despite a plucky performance and went down 2&1.
Will Starkey with Jack Leonard on his bag was never really troubled despite a lost ball in a greenside bunker on 9 to go on to win comfortably 2&1.
Ben Winton showed his consistency and experience with a great long birdie on the par 3 8th to go on and win easily 4&2.
Zac Bray came prepared with the winter golf gloves to stay warm but his opening was mixed but again like the other boys when he thawed out he played brilliantly to pull away after 9 to win 5&4.
Well done to our guys for playing smart golf and coming away with a well earned victory. Our next challenge is away again at Tea Tree Gully – I am sure we are up for this as well.
Many thanks to our wonderful caddies for braving the tough conditions- Jason Bray, Dave Rosie, Kane Hyams, Steve Jacquier, and our team players Anthony Wang and Jack Leonard.
Enjoy Mother’s Day and see you at Tea Tree Gully!

Women’s A3
The A3 Pennant team took on Kooyonga on a very brisk morning at Royal Adelaide. Final result was a 3 to 2 loss.
Tonia Ross at number 1 played some very good golf and never looked in trouble with a dominant 8/6 win.
Fiona Eblen at number 2 was embroiled in a tough fought match all the way to the eighteenth hole which was unfortunately squared and resulted in a 1 down loss.
Imelda Lynch at number 3 was also up and down in her match but able to snatch an exciting win on the 18th hole (1 Up).
Wendy Vaughan was 4 down early in her match but played well mid round to bring it back to within one hole. Unfortunately, her opponent prevailed in the end and took the match 3/2.
At number 5, Juliet Culley was up against a very steady player and with some unlucky bounces and unfortunate placement of a certain sprinkler head found herself down and unable to catch her opponent (loss 5/4).
A big thank you to the caddies – Anne Hooper, Louise Pike, Nick Eblen, Oscar Vaughan and Jan Dale Harris for your time and support to the players. Also thank you to Ros Osborn for coming out to spectate and support Team Glenelg.
Next week we take on North Adelaide at the Vines and will be looking to bounce back after the narrow loss!
Women’s Cleek 2
Playing at Blackwood, Tea Tree Gully proved too strong for us today. (4 ½ to ½ )
Cathie Molloy and Jennifer Carlaw playing at 1 and 2 respectively, each lost a tight match on the 17th hole while Julie Gobbie and Anne Tait lost their matches on the 16th.
All played well but felt that putting let them down in the end to their more experienced opponents.
It should be noted that today was Julie’s 1st ever match and Anne’s 2nd in Cleek.
Sharon Taylor at number 5 also played her first Cleek match today and had to give 8 shots to her opponent.
Sharon began nervously but rallied to play a very good match with some fabulous putting throughout. The match was finally squared on the 18th hole. Congratulations Sharon.
With 3 very promising rookies in the team, we feel we are only going to get better with time.

Junior Division 2
Junior Div 2 – Wk 1 Wrap
We had the pleasure of travelling north to Sandy Creek in week 1 of the Junior Div 2 fixture. Additionally, we had two youngsters suiting up for their first pennant matches, which was exciting for them and the team. Despite the lengthy travel time for our team, it was surpassed by that of our opponents – Country Districts – who had come from all over SA to make the match.
Jayden McGrath, one of the debutants, was away first and put up a solid fight all match. His opponent however, wound up holding steady for longer and took out the contest 5 & 3.
Our next away was our second newcomer, Hunter Griffiths. Hunter’s nerves got the better of him early, but he steadied the ship and fought it out, conceding at the conclusion of the 16th with the score at 4 & 2.
Brandon van den Berg was at 3 and had a tightly contested match that also concluded on 16, with another 4 & 2 loss for Glenelg.
Jay Rudrappagari was our no.2 and took on a kid twice his size – not unfamiliar territory for Jay. I don’t think any of the team enjoy competing more than Jay, but today, his opponent was unable to muster much resistance. Jay took the win 7 & 6.
Grace Ferrier was at 1 and found herself engaged in a match that saw numerous momentum swings through the round. Ultimately, she squared things up on 17 and after an enthralling 18th, the match remained tied for a half.
A disappointing 3.5 to 1.5 loss for Glenelg on the day, but some valuable experience gained by all team members, particularly the newcomers.

Junior Div 2 – Wk 2 Wrap
On Sunday, we found our way down to The Vines for our match against Royal Adelaide GC. The course was the best I’ve seen it. Conditions were ultimately pretty good for golf, despite the icy cold breeze and light rain that was broken up by patches of bright warm sunshine! Multiple layers came in handy, with frequent gear changes throughout the match! Our team was unchanged from week 1.
Jayden led us off again and had a tough fight on his hands from the start. He ultimately fell 5 & 4, but he enjoyed the day and the challenge of the contest, continuing his journey of development, with a growing passion for the game.
Hunter had another nervous start off the first tee. But the nerves quickly disappeared, taking control of his match and it stayed that way until midway through the back 9 when his opponent fought his way back into contention. Unfortunately, Hunter succumbed on the 17th, with the score at 2&1.
Brandon was again at 3 and had to give up 12 shots. Despite some very solid golf from Brandon, his opponent was having a day out and with his 12-shot advantage, it proved a bridge too far for Brandon with the contest finishing 7 & 6 against him.
Grace was at 2 this week and had quite the tussle giving up 9 shots. She was able to overcome this with some really solid play as the match wore on and some clutch putts late secured a 3 & 2 victory.
Jay played at 1 this week and after racing to an early lead which he held for the bulk of the front nine, his opponent wrested back momentum and managed to square up the duel by the 13th. At that stage, the pressure ramped up and both players lifted with some high-quality shot play and clutch moments. In the end it was a halved match.
An identical result to week 1 for the team, with a loss of 3.5 to 1.5 the outcome. The team again did their best and I was very proud of the way they represented Glenelg GC, with respect for their opponents and equally high regard for the course and the game.
