Simpson Cup Report – Round 1 – Sun 30 April 2023 | Glenelg v The Vines at The Vines
Taking on The Vines on their own course is always a tough assignment. However, we had a strong team in for the first match of the year with a good mix of youth and experience. We proved to be up to the task coming away with a hard fought 4 -3 win to get the season off to the best possible start. 15 Year Old Harry Leaf-Milham made his debut in Men’s Pennant and was presented with his Pennant cap by Michael Munn.
Nick Wake at No. 7 was the first match out against fellow veteran Paul Gregory. Nick got out to a 2 up lead early but at the turn the match was square. He battled away before Paul got the upper hand eventually losing 3/2. At No. 6 Matt Uebergang was in control of his match all day recording a comfortable 4/3 win. At No. 2 16 year old Kade Bryant made short work of his state junior team mate Charlie Nobbs with a dominant 6/5 win. Harry Burner followed him in with a good 2/1 win whilst Jack Buchanan lost a tight match 2/1 to state team mate and former Glenelg player Sam Earl.
So at this stage the score was 3-2 in our favour with two matches left on course both of which would go down to the wire. Playing at Number 5 Michael Munn was holding on to a 1 up lead through 16 holes but his opponent Tony Nobbs made a great birdie at 17 from the wrong fairway to level the match going down the long par 4 18th. Tony was well placed off the tee and reached the green with his second. Michael was blocked by a tree and was unable to reach the green but a solid pitch left him with about 12 feet for par. Tony two putted for his par. With nerves of steel Michael rolled in his downhill slider to save a valuable half meaning we could not lose the match having secured 3.5 points.
This left the overall result in the hands of our 15 year old debutant Harry Leaf-Milham (not that he knew it at the time!) playing at no 4. Both players were poorly placed off the tee and had to lay up with Harry in the better position after their second shots. His opponents third reached the front of the green and Harry was a little closer. His opponent almost holed his putt but had to settle for a 5. Harry then calmly two putted to secure the half and the winning half point that we needed.
Thanks to the caddies Josh Hayes, James Bridgen, Patrick Francis, Justin Howard and Wayne Humphries. Thanks also to the parents and club members who came out on a cool, grey day to support the team. Your support really is appreciated and the players love to see friendly faces in the gallery. Thanks also to our Pennant Sponsors Bradley Trade Services, Chess Moving, McGrath Real Estate and Vault Mobile Storage.
This was a really pleasing way to start our season and we now look forward to next week’s match against reigning champions Kooyonga at Thaxted Park from 11:15. We will be without the services of Jack Buchanan and Kade Bryant who will be representing SA in the Interstate Teams event in Sydney. Congratulations on your selection and good luck.

Bonnar Cup
Sunday 30th April 2023
Glenelg v. The Vines
A season opener against 2022 finalists The Vines was always going to be a tough opener for the Bonnar team and the boys did well to come away with a hard fought 4 matches to 3 victory.
Cool but mainly fine conditions greeted the team at the tight, tree-lined North Adelaide South course and we all knew fairways and (small) greens were going to be required to return an early win.
Matt Jacquier was 1st out, down early, Matt fought back to eventually go down 3&2. Will Starkey, making a much anticipated return to Glenelg pennant duties, played with composure to return a 3&2 victory and balance the ledger.
Harry Edwards, another player making a welcome return to pennants, met a very steady opponent and could not quite produce his great recent form, going down 5&3.
Ben Winton brought all his experience and some great shot making to prevail in a tough match and return an important 2&1 victory late in the day.
Max Jericho, representing the club for the first time, continued his great 2023 form with solid shot making and exceptional putting on tricky, small greens to win 6&5.
Mick Phillips, yet another welcome addition to our pennant group, lived up to the high expectations he brings and delivered a quality 2&1 victory.
Finally, playing no.1, Zac Bray went down 2&1 to a tenacious Chris Burns.
That was four games in on a difficult track against a quality opponent. We all now look forward to next weeks challenge of Regency Park at Regency Park.
Thanks to the caddies: Jason Bray, Fletch Ryan, Dave Rosie, Brad Bell and Steve Jacquier and the spectators that came out to support the team.

Women’s A3
It was as if the weather knew that Women’s A3 Pennant was starting today. It was cold and definitely wet during the match.
I thank all the caddies for coming out and helping the players today to victory.
PLAYERS | CADDIES | |
1 | Louise Pike | Cathy Symons |
2 | Tonia Ross | Annabel Hamilton |
3 | Fiona Eblen | Helen McMutrie |
4 | Imelda Lynch | Hannah Brown |
5 | Juliet Culley | Jan Dale Harris |
Glenelg played The Vines today (Monday May 1st) at Glenelg and won 3 ½ to 1 ½ matches.
Louise played Mary O’Hagen and was down the first two holes but won the 19th and didn’t look back. She was 2 up after the 6th hole and then remained 1 up for the remainder, halving most of the holes until winning the 18th to finish 2 up for the match. Thank you Louise for helping out with the A3’s today, it was a great help and gave us a win.
Tonia played Cathy Hayward and was consistent all the way through. Tonia was square after 10 holes and then lost a couple of holes to eventually lose 3/2. Well done Tonia against a very tough opponent.
Fiona played Kath Hender and was up for most of the match. Lost a couple of holes late, the rain not helping and ended up going down the 18th to square the match. Great effort Fiona.
Imelda played Leanne Alstrop and I heard that she was 3 up after the 3rd hole. Then 6 up after the 5th and finished easily with a score of +7/6. There is nothing for me to say, but great golf Imelda.
Juliet played Jenny Hirst and was a little slow off the blocks, 1 down after the 3rd hole and then 2 down after the 6th. I caught up again with Juliet after the 10th and she was square. Then didn’t see her again for a few holes where I found she was 2 up after the 14th. Juliet won +4/2. Her caddy informed me that she played exceptionally well and had two sandys. 1 on the 4th hole to par the hole and square it. The other was on the 14th to Par that hole. There might have been more spectacular shots but I didn’t catch them all. Well done Juliet.
All the players played exceptionally well and I now pass the role of Manager off to Anna Standish on her return from holidays.

Women’s Cleek 2
Monday 1st May at Mount Osmond Vs BLACKWOOD
The day began with dense fog and rain which forced the cancellation of Cleek 1 earlier in the day.
Our ladies hit off the 1st tee into the fog which fortunately cleared by about the 3rd hole and gave the teams perfect playing conditions.
Most of the matches were incredibly close throughout the day and finished on the 17th or 18th holes.
Our 2 rookies in the team performed extremely well with Anne Tait winning 2/1 on the 17th and Maureen Watson narrowly losing her match 2/1 also on the 17th.
Jo McCarthy had a sound win 2/1 and Karin Harris had a bit of a struggle against a solid player.
With just 1 match to go, the result was tied at 2 wins each.
Des Carey, our number 1 player today, was battling a strong opponent and her match went to the 18th, finishing squared.
It was a fine result (match squared) playing Blackwood on a hills course.
Thankyou to our squad members and to Simon Tait who kindly caddied today.
