Glenelg defeated West Lakes at West Lakes 3½ to 1½ in a tense Final to bring home the flag

The Glenelg team were ahead after nine, with four players up and Sue Raggatt square.

We knew that keeping this going, against the home team, was going to require strong match play skills over the back nine.

Jo Ricourt was our first winner. She was three up after 12, then just 1 up after the fifteenth. Jo’s steady match skills saw her play accurate drives and putts to win at the 17th

Our second winner was Sue Raggatt.  Winning her last three holes concluded an excellent season for Sue. Long hitting and a good short game payed dividends for our Women’s Captain.

Sue Tuohy was ahead after the fifteen, and square playing the 18th. Unfortunately for Sue her excellent short game was for once elusive, allowing her opponent to score a closely fought win.

At this point of time an overall result was still in the balance. And our two remaining matches were required to play past the 18th for a result!

Jo Lendrum was 2 down with three holes to play. Excellent approach shots and accurate putting saw Jo win the critical 16th and 17th against a very experienced West Lakes player. The 18th hole was halved, so to the 19th. A large crowd was following this game; both players hit the green in regulation. Her opponent missed her second putt. Not so for Jo! The jubilation when Jo sank her second putt for a par, and a third match win, sounded like a roar from the days of Footy Park!!!

Our number one player, Sandy Francas, had played positively all day to be ‘dormie’ at the 15th. A tense last 3 holes: her opponent won these holes to set up play down the 19th.  Once the result was finalized with 3 wins, a halved match was recorded for Sandy.

An excellent well-deserved Pennant win for a highly focused, long hitting team. Congratulations.

Thanks to our caddies: Cathy Darling, Fiona Eblen, Jill Gehling, Bec Hughes and Bob Tuohy. Their dedication and support are such an important winning team component.

And special thanks to the coaching staff at Glenelg.  Sarah’s advice, motivation, and skill drills are much valued.

And finally, thanks to the many club members who were at West Lakes. The support and encouragement for this team was fantastic!

All the best to Glenelg’s teams this Sunday!

Manager
