The Burgandy Trophy is named after former member, Dr Owen Burgan who passed away in October 2017. Owen joined as a member in 1985 and was an active participant in many of the club’s events including the Winery Challenge and Captain’s lunch.
Owen was passionate about the club and wanted to contribute by running and sponsoring a fun, social event with a different format, hence the Burgandy Trophy rules were born. Mulligan’s are allowed, preferred lies are taken everywhere, except on the green or in a hazard and the winning score is usually in the 70-point range for the team aggregate format.
The event format is extremely popular with those who participate and during the presentations on the balcony everyone lifted their glasses and gave “cheers” in memory of Owen’s contribution to the club.
