On Sunday, 15th July, Glenelg won the Simpson Cup for the third year in a row with a thrilling victory against Grange at The Grange Golf Club. In a very tight finish, our players held their nerve to finish with classy golf and retain the Cup.
No. 6 – Anthony Olsen. When Anthony pulls on the Club jumper, you just know what you are going to get. After a stirring address to the team, Anthony was quickly in control of his game and closed out an important early win 4/3.
No. 7 – Michael Munn. In a really high quality game that seesawed through the first 12 holes, Michael’s opponent held strong making a brilliant birdie at 17 to close out a 2/1 victory.
No. 5 – Harry Burner. Maybe experiencing some nerves playing in his first Simpson Cup Final Harry did not have his best day, losing 4/3. Harry, it will be great learning curve for you.
No. 3 – Frank Vucic. It was a brilliant performance from Frank against State teammate, Colin Coleman. Following a close fought front nine, he put together a brilliant back nine to record a 3/2 victory. This win levelled off the match at 2 games each with 3 games still in the balance.
No. 2 – Josh Hayes. Playing high up the order all season, Josh completed a wonderful season with a brilliant birdie at the last, to win a crucial game 1 up. He is another of our players that likes to step up for the big moment.
No. 1 – Jackson Kalz. Playing against Jack Thompson, the golfer considered the best amateur in South Australia, Jackson did us very proud with an amazing victory. His up and down save at 17 and a brilliant birdie on the 18th sealed his 1 up result, and the teams 4th fabulous win.
No. 4 – Ben Layton. Ben seems to relish the challenge of a final, and once again played a fantastic game. A really solid finish under pressure had him in a commanding position at the 20th green when a halved game was called, wins from Josh and Jackson got us to the required 4 wins.
Congratulations guys, you are building a wonderful record. Undefeated over 3 seasons speaks volumes for your commitment to the programme. Well done.
