On Sunday, 15th July 2018 Glenelg played Royal Adelaide in the final of the Pike Cup on the East Course at The Grange.  With Simpson Cup and Sanderson Cup playing off the 1st, the Men’s A2 and Pike Cup teed off the 10th.

Playing at No. 5, Bec Hughes played Pauline Morrison.  Bec started a bit slow and was very unlucky on her second hole.  Bec did a spectacular pitch to within ‘gimme’ distance of the pin.  Unfortunately her opponent Pauline also hit a great pitch – her ball hit Bec’s and then went into the hole for birdie.  Bec was 1 down after the 9th but won the next two holes to be 1 up.  Bec continued that trend to win 4/3.

Our No. 3 Tilly Miels played Annabel Blanch.  Tilly played well, although she probably thought she could have improved her short game.  Tilly was 1 up after 5 holes and continued in that vein to win 5/3.

At No. 4, Louise Pike played Eliza Bartlett.  Louise was her normal steady self and at the turn was 1 up, then 3 up after 13 holes.  Louise lost a couple of holes and was 1 up going down 18 and played a superb shot onto the green, her opponent was in the right bunker and then over the back.  Louise won 2 up.  Loud cheers were emitted by spectators as she had won her game and the Pike Cup was ours.

Sam White played Sally Nobbs and when I saw Sam playing the 11th (our second hole), she was hitting her ball from around the 12th tee area, not to worry, she hit a great recovery shot, a theme for Sam’s day.  She was 2 down after 13 holes and had fought back to square when the match was called to a halt as we had won.

At No. 1, Tilly Wheare played Edwina Grant.  Last time Tilly played Edwina it was at Tanunda Pines and they squared the match.  It was a tough fight once again with Tilly 1 up when her match was called off.  I am confident she would have won her match if given the opportunity.

Thank you so much to all our caddies Judy, Ian & Cathy Symons, Kay Nyland, Heather Waddy and Brian Hughes.  Without your assistance and support, it would be a lot harder for the team.  I am certainly thankful and grateful.

Golf SA presided over the presentations of medals after the matches concluded.  We received our medals from Louise Pike on behalf of the Fiona Pike Foundation.  Thank you Louise.

The Cup returned to Glenelg to go on show with the Simpson Cup and the A3 Plate.

At the Celebratory Dinner at Glenelg, the ladies decided that they needed a Club song, so it was agreed that ‘Tigerland’ was appropriate.  Fiona Eblen was enlisted to start the ball rolling when she was thanking and introducing the Manager of the A3 team.  The A2 ladies were in fine voice and after a few others joined in, certainly a great night.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to the teams that were runners-up on making the finals, a great effort.
