15 year old Glenelg member Harry Burner is the Runner up State Champion! Harry has been a member at Glenelg since May 2015 after moving from The Grange to join our junior program. He is a great ambassador for our Club, cheeky yet well mannered off the course, and mature beyond his years on course. We, along with his coach, Gareth Jones, are incredibly proud of his efforts last week. Well done Harry!

SA Men’s Amateur Championsip – Final Wrap
Jake Hughes from Alice Springs Golf Club defeated Glenelg’s Harrison Burner 3&2 to win the South Australian Amateur Championship played at Blackwood Golf Club.
Hughes qualified sixth for the match play component after stroke play rounds of 74-75.
With a tough run through to the final, Hughes first defeated Travis Miller (Woodlands) 2&1 then ended the hopes of Colin Coleman from The Grange 3&2.
In the quarter and semi-finals Hughes was pushed all the way, first defeating Jordan Ayre from Royal Canberra 1up and then New South Welshman Andrew Richards 2up to progress through to the final.
“Before today in the match play I think I played pretty good, I think I was under par” Hughes said.
Hughes faced 15-year old Harry Burner in the 36 hole final. After qualifying 20th with rounds of 72-80 Burner cruised through the match play rounds with wins over Nathan Barbieri (Monash) 4&3, Lochie Colborn (Mt Coolum) 3&2 and then Charlie Cameron (Royal Canberra) 5&4.
In the semi-finals, in a boil over, Burner defeated top qualifier Blake Windred on the 19th to be an unexpected finalist.
Burner continued his golden run in the final producing some fine golf to take the early lead and at the turn was 3up.
After a short lunch break the players continued along with Burner moving to 4up through 19 before momentum dramatically swung in Hughes’ favor.
Hughes found the same form that he showed in early rounds, to quickly square the match and then moved ahead to hold a comfortable buffer with a few holes to play. The championship would end on the 16th hole (34th) with Hughes too strong and steady for Burner winning 3&2.
“This morning I played pretty horrifically I guess. Feels pretty good, yeah pretty surreal I guess to win the Championship. I ‘ve never actually played the SA Amateur before, but hopefully it’s the first of many to come”

“This week I didn’t play as best as I could, but it worked out, so it was alright.
“Considering Kono played really well, we all played really steady in the afternoon, but she found a bit of trouble and I just consistently played to par so it really helped me.
“It feels good. It feels great actually, especially being able to come back and win after being down”. Kim said.
