In Bonnar Cup the Tea Tree Gully team came to Glenelg well prepared and certainly put up a competitive effort. The Glenelg boys responded to the challenge and played some really solid golf to win 5.5 to 1.5.
At the half way mark the contest was very tight – tied away at 3 and a half matches each.
At No.7 James Bridgen was 2 down early, got it back to square after 8, but then went 3 down after 13 but rallied to get back to square playing 18, only to lose the last hole to a steady par from his opponent to finish one down.
Andy Humphries at No 6 encountered an opponent in good form and had a tight match all day – his opponent was under the card early and got to 3 up after 8 – Andy then won 4 holes in a row to get to 1 up after 12, He maintained that advantage playing the final hole , but frustratingly for Andy (and what can happen in pennant golf) he squandered a winning opportunity with a poor approach shot and opened the door for his opponent to win the last hole for a squared match result.
Henry Duregon at No.5 had a day out, albeit he would have been disappointed with halves on 1 and 6 from winning positions, but was in control of his match all day getting out to 5 up after 9 and maintaining the momentum to win his game 7 & 6.
At No. 4, Jack Buchanan was on fire early – he started 3,3,3,3,4 to be 4 under the card after 5 holes and 4 up in his game – his opponent was playing par golf and to his credit he kept himself in the game and was only 2 down after 9. Jack then won 10 and 11 to be 4 up after 11 and remained solid to record a nice 3 & 2 win.
David Hiern and his opponent at No 3 had an amazing game – between them they had 9 birdies and an eagle! Hierny was 1 and 2 up mainly through the first 10 holes, but his opponent fought back with an eagle at 12 to get back to square after 12 – but David won 14 and 17 to close out his game 2 & 1.
Frank Vucic at No. 2 got out to an early 2 up after 3 lead, but his opponent fought back strongly to get to a 1up lead after 11. Frank then went on to win 4 of the next 6 holes to win an important game in the context of the match 3 & 1.
Meanwhile Michael Munn at No. 1 was having a really tight game – for most of the day there was only one hole separating the players either way – and the game was all square going down 18 and Michael played a solid 18th hole just missing his birdie putt leaving his opponent a five foot putt to halve the game, but that slipped by giving Michael a hard earned 1 up victory.
Thank you to all the caddies, parents and members who came out to support the players. Thank you to the Pro Shop staff, Ian Symons for being the Rules Official, the greens staff for setting up our course in such magnificent condition and the bar and catering staff – I received many positive comments from our visitors on the course and the warm reception at Glenelg.
We now have a bye for the June long weekend – our next match on Sunday 18th June promises to be a beauty and will certainly provide us a challenging test – we journey to Grange West to play Grange on their home course with tee off from 11.15am.
So, whilst we have had a strong start to the season, we still have Grange and Kooyonga to play over the next 2 matches – it will be imperative to win these games to qualify for the Final.
