Another win for Simpson Cup

Report by Geoff Attenborough
Team Manager

In perfect winter conditions for golf at Tea Tree Gully Golf Club, our Simpson Cup team continued their great form with a comprehensive 6.5 to a 0.5 win over Thaxted Park.

The contest tight for the first 8 holes with 4 players marginally up, 2 down and 1 square however our boys gained the ascendancy on the back nine to gain the win.

Team captain Anthony Olsen playing at No. 7 continued his solid form, winning his match 5/4. Anthony’s example of leadership sets the trend for the rest of the team and it is great to have his reliability playing in the lower order.

Ben Layton at No. 6 found the going tough early, being square after 8 holes. However Ben won the next 3 holes to be 3 up after 11 extending out to win his match 5/3.

Playing at No. 5 Josh Hayes had a great battle with his Thaxted opponent. After being 2 up through 4 holes, Josh all of a sudden was 1 down after 8. This score remained the same for the next 9 holes until Josh won the 18th hole to get the half. Well played with a never give up attitude.

Jackson Kalz at No. 4 continued his winning form with a workmanlike 5/4 win. After being square through 4 holes Jackson gained a 3 hole advantage after 8 extending out to 4 up after 11 and eventually closing the match out 5/4.

Sam Burton playing No. 3 had a really tough day playing at his old club against a very determined Thaxted opponent. After being 2 down through 3 holes Sam was in for a tough day. After getting back to square through 11 the match was even until the 17th where Sam gained a crucial 1 hole advantage, after halving the last Sam completed a tough 1up win. Like Josh Hayes this showed a fantastic never give up attitude.

Sam Earl at No. 2 also continued on his winning way with a convincing 4/2 win. Getting off to a fast start being 3 up through 5 holes, and still 3 up after 8, Sam all of a sudden lost the next 2 holes to be only 1 up through 11. Showing his class, Sam quickly regained his 3 hole advantage to eventually close out the match 4/2.

At No. 1 Lachlan Barker did not have it all his way for the first 9 holes. With a couple of uncharacteristic 3 putts and some good play from his opponent, Lachy only held a 1 hole advantage after 8. He won 2 of the next 3 holes to be 3 up after 11, closing out his match 4/3. Good effort by Lachy especially his eagle to win the 11th hole.

This was no easy win for our boys and Gary and myself are so pleased with the team’s never give up attitude. This will go a long way in our quest to have a back to back Simpson Cup result, but as we realise nwe cant take anything for granted. Our focus is now on next week’s match against Kooyonga at Thaxted Park. This will be an extremely tough encounter against a high quality team who will be very keen to test our boys.

As I say every week, thanks to our caddies and supporters helping our boys get across the line. It would be great if we could have more members out watching and supporting the team and viewing some great quality golf.
