Simpson Cup boys get off to first round flyer

Report by Geoff Attenborough
Team Manager

On a perfect autumn day, on a beautifully presented Blackwood Golf Club, the Glenelg Simpson Cup team got off to the perfect start with a 7 matches to 0 win against The Vines of Reynella.

The start to our title defence from last year was led out by Ben Layton playing in the no. 7 position, and after getting off to a slow start being 1 hole down after 4 he quickly got his game in order to be 2 up after 8 holes. Then he really stamped his authority to complete a very solid 6/4 win.

Next to play at no. 6 was our ever reliable captain Anthony Olsen. After an even start being square after 4 holes, Anthony gained a 1 hole advantage after 9 holes. He then had a 2 hole advantage after 14 holes and eventually closed out his match 2/1.

Josh Hayes, playing at no. 5, had a tough battle against a determined Vines opponent who had a very hot putter. This match was tight all game with Josh completing a hard fought 2/1 win and being 5 under the card for 17 holes when he finished. This was pennant golf at the highest level.

Jackson Kalz, playing no. 4, after an even start stamped his authority on this match with an eagle 2 on the par 4 13th hole, his 4th hole of the match to go 1up. Jackson was never headed after this hole to then extend his lead to be 4u p after 8, and he eventually won this match 4/3.

Sam Burton, our new recruit from Tea Tree Gully, made the perfect start winning his match 2/1. This was no easy task for Sam being 2 down after 2 holes and remaining 2 down after 9. Sam then won 4 of the next 5 holes to be 2 up after 14, eventually winning 2/1.

Sam Earl played at no. 2 and was another of our boys to get off to an even start. Being square after 4 holes he gained a 2 hole advantage after 8 holes, which extended to 3 up after 11 holes, and eventually completed with a very convincing 6/4 win.

Lachlan Barker at no. 1 was in complete control of his match being 3 up after 4 holes, extending to be 5 up after 11 holes, and eventually winning 5/4.

Well played everyone and thanks to all caddies and club members for supporting the team.

With the perfect start to the season we travel to The Grange Golf Club to play Blackwood next Sunday on the west course at 12:10pm. It would be great to see more club members come out to support our boys and also see some great quality golf.

Good luck To Lachlan Barker who is travelling to Malaysia to defend his Malaysian Amateur title next week. It would be great for Lachy if he can defend the title.
