Report by Wayne Humphries
Team Manager
The Bonnar Cup team this year is a very strong side and if the players can maintain their form, attitude and confidence throughout the season, we should be very competitive.
We welcome Michael Munn from Blackwood to the team – his previous experience playing Simpson Cup golf for Blackwood certainly adds some depth to our Pennant squad this year. We also welcome back David Hiern to the Pennant squad, having missed the past couple of seasons due to work commitments.
We also now see continuing development from our Junior lads with Frank Vucic (aged 15), Jack Buchanan (aged 15) and Harry Burner (aged 15) all representing South Australia in the Interstate Junior Series this year.
Throw in our 2015 Club Champion Jack Tanner (now aged 16) and experienced Henry Duregon (unbeaten in pennants last year) and we have a great mix of youth and experience.
It will be critical for the team this year to “embrace the challenge” of high expectation and to prepare themselves well to bring their best performance on game day.
This Round 1 game was critical for us to win – to gain confidence and build some winning momentum.
From early on our boys took a decisive advantage and throughout the day Glenelg was always headed for a comfortable victory.
At No. 7 Harry Burner was always in control and birdied his last 2 holes to win his game 8 & 6.
Jack Tanner at No. 6 recovered from a slow start being 3 down after 3, to record a comfortable 4 & 2 win.
Jack Buchanan at No. 5 played very steady golf and had a big 7 & 6 win.
Likewise at No. 4, Henry Duregon continued on his winning way for a 6 & 5 victory.
David Hiern at No. 3 played against previous Glenelg member Tyrone Davies (son of Taffy) and shot out to be 4 up after 8 and maintained that advantage to win 4 & 3.
Frank Vucic at No. 2 played against Royal Adelaide legend and Golf SA Hall of Fame member David Cherry. Frank got off to a steady start to be 3 up after 5 and was still 3 up after 10, but typically David Cherry was not giving in and took the game to the 18th where Frank won 2 up.
At No.1 Michael Munn (admitting some nerves at playing his first game for Glenelg) had a tight game. His opponent holed some crucial putts to stay in the game with only 1 hole separating the boys throughout most of the day, but Michael maintained his nerve and won the 17th for a 2 & 1 victory. Congratulations Michael on your first win for Glenelg.
Thank you to all the caddies, parents and the handful of club members for their support to the players – particularly on Mother’s Day.
Next Sunday we play Flagstaff Hill at Blackwood from 12.10pm – it will be important for the boys to stay focused and play some good golf to win – we will not take anything for granted!
