Glenelg wins Bronze Challenge

Winning Team - Glenelg Golf ClubReport by Cathy Johnson (Women’s Captain)

Captain's & President'sOn Thursday, 4th August Glenelg Golf Club hosted the RAGC ladies. 9 players, with Golf Australia Handicaps between 15 and 25, represented Glenelg Golf Club. Golf was followed by a delicious sit down lunch and very animated conversation – a fun day had by all.

RAGC had won the 3 previous contests so we were keen to use our home course advantage and bring home the cup. Delightfully our ladies were able to achieve their aim winning 7 matches to 2.

History of the Bronze Challenge

This cup was originally won by the late Miss L M Gordon for the Glenelg Ladies Golf Club Monthly Medal in 1912. Subsequently it was presented to RAGC by her sister, Helen Gordon.

In 1975 Mrs R T (Nan) Steele suggested that this cup be used for match play experience for Associates not yet eligible for Grades 1 and 2 Pennant teams. Preference was to be given to younger players reducing handicaps, rather than those ‘on the way up’. (Unfortunately this has not always been the case).

The Royal Adelaide Bronze Challenge was born in 1976, with teams of 9 players playing 2 matches annually using both courses.
