Lisk, Evreniadis, Kennewell take out Vardon titles

2016 Glenelg Vardon Winners - Cassidy Evreniadis, Matt Lisk & Liam Kennewell

The Grange’s Matt Lisk and Cassidy Evreniadis, and Glenelg’s Liam Kennewell, have claimed this years’ respective Glenelg Vardon trophies played in perfect weather conditions on Sunday.

Lisk, who previously tasted success in 2012, took out his second Brian Ferris Memorial Trophy with solid rounds of 71, 74 for a 3-over par total of 145, five shots clear of runner-up, and fellow Grange member, Colin Coleman.  Royal Adelaide’s Patric Kroschel was a further three shots back in third place, whilst Glenelg’s Sam Raschella, Josh Hayes and Sam Earl claimed 4th, 5th and 6th places respectively.

In the Glenelg Women’s Vardon, Evreniadis won the Waddy & Rundle Trophy by six shots from Glenelg’s Elysia Yap.  The Vines youngster, Caitlin Peirce, took out the handicap event with a net score of 147 for the 36 holes.

However, the excitement happened in the Eric Scovell Junior Vardon event, where it took an amazing eagle on the final hole by Frank Vucic to force a playoff with fellow clubmate, Kennewell.  On Vucic’s 15th birthday, you could be forgiven for thinking the title was his for the taking, but in failing light, Kennewell put a dampener on Vucic’s party.

After Kennewell’s drive finished in the left trees on the 1st playoff hole (18th), Vucic pumped driver  to within 2 metres of his earlier drive, which had resulted in the eagle.  Not to be phased, Kennewell recovered perfectly, leaving himself a pitch into the green, finishing about 15 feet from the hole.  Vucic’s second finished in the greenside trap and a good recovery saw him just inside Kennewell.  In near darkness, Kennewell calmly rolled his putt in for a birdie four, and after Vucic’s putt slid past the hole, the trophy was Kennewell’s.

Glenelg’s Jackson Kalz finished 3rd in the Junior event, with Royal Adelaide’s Will Arnold and Kooyonga’s Joe Hodgson closing out 4th and 5th places.
