Simpson Cup team defeats The Grange

Ben Hallam

Report by Geoff Attenborough (Team Manager)

The Glenelg Simpson Cup team travelled to The Grange Golf Club, for our toughest test of the season playing Grange at home. This was a match that could define the season for our boys and they did not let the Club down with a hard fought 4/3 win.

Ben Hallam continued his unbeaten run playing no7 winning his match 1up.This was tight contest the whole day with only a 1 hole advantage to either player until Ben gained a 2 hole advantage with 2 to play, seemingly being in a winning position with a short putt to win on the 17th which lipped out sent the match down 18. Ben halved the 18th to give us a crucial win, well played.

Andy Humphries had a tough battle on a course he had hardly played previously. After being all square after 10 holes Andy lost 3 of the next 4 holes to be 3 down at the 15th and seemingly going to have an early finish. Not to be outdone and won the next 2 holes to be 1 down playing the 18th, unfortunately his opponent won the last to win the match 2up.

Anthony Olsen again played his lead from the front captains match with a never give up come from behind win. After being 2 down for most of the front 9, Anthony really found his form on the back 9 to get to a 2 hole advantage with 2 to play, eventually closing out the match 2/1. Well done.

Jackson Kalz continued on his winning way again this week. After being 2 holes down after 4, Jackson regained the ascendancy to be square after 8 holes. Applying the pressure against a much older and experienced opponent Jackson won 4 of the next 7 holes to complete a convincing 4/3 win.

Josh Hayes did not have the best day by his normally high standards losing his match 2 down. After being 4 holes down after 8 Josh to his credit fought back to be only 1 down after 17. Unfortunately his Grange opponent birdied the last to win 2up.

Sam Earl had a very tough battle against his state team mate Liam Georgiadis who with the advantage of home course local knowledge was just a little too strong on the winning this match 3/2. Sam never gave up in his match and made Liam earn his win.

Lachy Barker, after returning from his Malaysian Amateur win 2 weeks ago, played outstanding golf to record a very comfortable 6/4 win. After being 2 up after 9 holes Lachy put the foot down winning the next 4 holes to close out the match.

This was a crucial win for our team and it was very satisfying to see every player fight their match to the end. This now stands us in good stead for the remaining matches but we as a team know it is 1 week at a time.

Again thanks to all caddies and supporters who tum up each week and support the players. Also well done to the Bonner Cup and Sharp Cup junior teams on their strong wins.
