In a match that Glenelg started as warm favourites, it was pleasing to see the Glenelg players’ commitment to stay focused and their resolve to play well – defeating North Adelaide 6 games to 1 at Kooyonga. The Glenelg boys held a strong advantage throughout the day and looked headed for a convincing win from early on.
We had another player making his Men’s Pennant debut for Glenelg. Young Harry Burner (aged 14) played at No.7 and got off to a steady start to be all square after 9, but then a nice par on the difficult 10th and a birdie on 11 got him out to 2 up – he held that advantage through to the 15th then had a solid birdie on 16 to win his match 3 and 2. Well played Harry and congratulations on a great debut win.
James Bridgen played his first Bonnar Cup game for this year at No.6 – he shot out to be 5 up after 11 after some great approach shots and a couple of nice birdies. However, his seasoned opponent was not to be denied, holing some nice putts to win the next 4 holes. James steadied though by winning the 16th and halving the 17th to take the match 2 and 1. Nice return James and well done.
At No.5 Jack Tanner continued his winning form – he was certainly challenged early when he was 2 down after 6 but proceeded to win the next 4 holes to be 2up after 10. A loss at 11 brought it back to only 1 up, but then Jack won another 4 holes in a row to finish his game with a great 5 and 3 win.
Jack Buchanan at No.4 was also challenged early being 1 down after 4, but turned to be 2 up after 9. Young Jack continued to play some masterful approach shots to maintain his ascendancy and went on to record a nice 4 and 2 win.
Sam Raschella at No. 3 had bit of a roller coaster ride but continued his winning form for this season – some nice birdies, some errant tee shots, some amazing recovery shots and a hot putter enabled Sam to be square after 9 – then going 2 up after 14 and went on to win 3 and 1.
Luke Bashford at No. 2 got off to a good start being 3 up after 7. However, his opponent then went birdie, birdie to make it only one the difference after 9. It was an absorbing battle on the back 9 – Luke’s opponent continued to play solid golf and got to 1 up after 14. A great 2 iron tee shot on 15 to 5 feet won the hole for Luke and his game was now back to square. However, a couple of 3 putts from long range on both 16 and 17 enabled his opponent to take the game 2 and 1.
Henry Duregon at No.1 also had an absorbing battle all day. He was square after 9, but edged out to be 2 up after 15 . Henry lost both 16 and 17 to be all square, and playing the last where he played 2 great shots to be 10 feet away after 2 and putting for birdie. This putt was conceded after his opponent failed to get up and down after missing the green leaving Henry winning his game up.
So a good start to the season – played 3, won 3 but with some tough games to come.
Thank you to all the caddies, parents and a handful of club members who came out to watch the boys. There was a vast array of amazing shots and birdies made by all the boys and I encourage club members to come out and watch some of this Pennant action.
