Another good win for Glenelg’s Simpson Cup team

Sam Earl

Report by Geoff Attenborough (Team Manager)

The Glenelg Simpson Cup team had a solid 5 matches to 2 win over a determined Southern team in very trying cold wet and windy conditions at Blackwood Golf Club on Sunday.

Our first match out saw Ben Hallam pitted against former Glenelg Simpson Cup player Simon Connelly and what a tough contest it was. There was only a one hole advantage either way with Ben holding a one hole lead after 16. Ben then lost the advantage, losing the 17th hole to go back to square.  Both players made par on the 18th to have a halved match probably in the end a fitting result.

Next to play was Brodie Whitbread, a young member playing his first Simpson Cup match for the Club. In tough conditions Brodie was not quite able to overcome his Southern opponent losing 4/3. It was a step up for Brodie and he will be better for the experience.

Andy Humphries playing his first Simpson Cup match for Glenelg after a long and successful time playing Simpson Cup for Blackwood used all his experience to record a very comfortable 6/5 win.  After being 3 up after six holes, Andy exerted his control to complete his solid win.

Jackson Kalz, after his great win last week, had a quick promotion up the order from no 6 last week to no 4 this week with Lachy Barker and Josh Hayes both unavailable. He did not let us down with another solid 4/3 win.

Anthony Olsen at no 3 had a tough battle against Southern captain Chad Methven. With the match being all square after seven holes, Anthony lost three of the next eight holes to be 3 down with three to play. Showing the fight needed to be a successful team, Anthony won the last three holes to get a halved result which at the end of the season could be very important. Well done.

Ben Layton after a solid win last week stepped up again with a solid 8/6 win.  After being four holes μp after seven, Ben exerted his influence on the match to cruise to a very comfortable win.  An outstanding effort in the conditions.

Sam Earl at no 1 completed a very hard fought win against another former Glenelg Simpson Cup player Chris Burns. After gaining a four hole advantage after six it looked as though Sam would record a quite easy win.  Not to be denied, Chris cut the deficit back to be only 1 down after eleven. However, Sam kept his composure to gain a three hole advantage with three to play and eventually win 3/2.

Two solid wins at the start of the pennant season has given the team a good platform going forward but our mantra is one week at a time as to keep our momentum going.

Thanks to the caddies who did a great job in tough conditions and to the supporters who also braved the weather, thanks as I know the players appreciate your support.
