Yap shines in 2nd round of Rene Erichsen Salver

Glenelg’s Elysia Yap has carded one of the best rounds of her career, a 2-under par 71, to be in a tie for second place following the 2nd round of the Rene Erichsen Salver being played at Royal Adelaide Golf Club this week.

Yap shares second place with Shina Kanazawa (Japan) and Olivia Kline (Vic), the later firing the low round of the day, a four-under 69, but the grouping still trails Robyn Choi from RACV Royal Pines in Queensland, who leads by two strokes, after rounds of 71,72 to be 3-under the card.

Yap was surprised with her form, which included four birdies today, three on the back nine.

“It’s the first time I have been under par at a major tournament” Yap said.

Choi who only turned 18 last week, fired four birdies in the second round, on holes two, four, nine and 15, but struggled on the 18th, again making bogey.  Choi said she will have one eye on her opposition in round three, but also try and focus on the play ahead.

In the Golf SA Classic, Glenelg’s contingent faltered somewhat in the second round, with Sam Earl and Lachlan Barker carding a 36-hole total of 3-over, trailing Harrison Endycott (NSW) who moved into the outright lead at 7-under par, after posting an impressive second round 69 to go with his opening round 68.

Teeing off this morning from the 8th tee in perfect conditions, Endycott was three-under through nine holes once again making birdie on holes 13 and 15. His inward nine included a bogey on the par-5 second hole and final birdie on the short but tricky, par-3, third.  With only one bogey through 36 holes, the Riversdale Cup champion is playing error free golf, to lead by two strokes.

“I’m hitting a lot of fairways and greens and leaving myself in the right positions to hold a few putts,” Endycott said.

Overnight joint-leaders Ben Ferguson (WA) and Chris Park (QLD) both shot a one-under round of 71 to share second place, with Mitchell Smith from Oxley Golf Club, who had the joint low-round of the day with Curtis Luck (WA), posting an impressive four-under 68.

Glenelg’s first round surprise, 13-year old Jack Buchanan, started his second round nervously with a triple-bogey seven on the 8th hole and struggled to repeat the form that saw him fire an even-par 72 in the first round, eventually carding a disappointing 85 to miss the 36-hole cut.  Despite the difficulty faced in today’s round, “JB” will take a lot out of the experience, and given his young age, he is sure to be a force to reckon with in the future.

Ben Layton fired a second round 1-over to be tied in 24th position at 5-over for the tournament alongside fellow Glenelg member, Sam Burton, whilst teenagers Jacob Rillotta and Jackson Kalz both fired consistent 4-over second rounds to sneak into the top 60 by a couple of shots.  Josh Hayes struck back following a disappointing 8-over first round to card a 1-over 73 to sit at 9-over for the tournament and sneak under the cut line of 154 (10-over).
