It is with great sadness that we advise members of the passing of John Maddern AM, who passed away on Sunday evening, 8th March 2015, aged 89.
John was the Club’s longest serving member, having joined Glenelg as an 11 year old in July 1936. John served on the Club’s Committee from 1966 to 1970 and was also a very active member of Royal Adelaide Golf Club, serving on their Committee, as Captain and more recently as President.
John represented Glenelg Golf Club in pennant golf, having been a member of our successful 1958 and 1963 winning Simpson Cup teams.
John was also an inaugural member of Glenelg Golf Club’s “50 Year Club”, established only a few years ago. He was a generous donor to the Club’s Heritage Fund and as a result was recognised in 2013 as a Heritage Society member.
The historic footage above is the earliest known video footage of Glenelg’s golf links, and was kindly provided to the Club by John, and features him as a 14 year old in 1938 playing the links with his mother, Thea Maddern.
We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to John’s family and friends.
May he rest in peace.
