Glenelg’s Jason Goldsworthy and Lachlan Barker currently sit within the top 30 after round one of the Australian Amateur Championships played today in Sydney.
Playing at the secondary host club, The Lakes Golf Club, Goldsworthy fired an even par opening round to be tied in 17th position, four shots adrift of leaders, Nick Marsh and Ryan Ruffels. A former Club Junior Champion at Glenelg, Goldsworthy has only recently returned to Adelaide following a number of years living in Canada.
2015 SA Junior Masters runner-up, Barker, also playing at The Lakes, had an up and down round to shoot one-over to be tied in 27th position.
Both Goldsworthy and Barker will tee it up at The Australian in their second rounds tomorrow.
At the host club, The Australian Golf Club, Sam Earl, who has recently joined Glenelg from The Vines, shot a 3-over par 75 to be sitting in a tie for 72nd, whilst Josh Hayes had a disappointing 77 (5-over) to be tied in position 108. Both players will require low scores in their second rounds at The Lakes tomorrow to qualify for the matchplay.
In the women’s section, Jenny Lee had a very disappointing day by her standards, firing a 5-over par 78 around The Australian Golf Club, to be seven shots off the pace in a tie for 33rd position.
The leading 64 players in the men’s section, and the top 32 players in the women’s event, will progress through to the elimination matchplay rounds at The Australian Golf Club, commencing on Thursday.
