Golf SA has inducted internationally decorated player Bob Stevens to its hall of fame.
Stevens — a Glenelg Simpson Cup legend, former Australian Amateur champion and national captain — was the sole elevation to the hall of fame at a gala dinner at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, 18th October 2014.
The four-time SA Open and three-time SA Amateur winner, who died aged 80 in 2008, was inducted by fellow South Australian great and hall of famer Bob Tuohy.
“Bob was, I think, the perfect amateur, if that makes sense,” said Tuohy, a former pennant teammate.
“He was a very good striker and a very good competitor. And a dapper dresser — always in a white shirt, tie tucked in between the buttons.
“He idolised Ben Hogan, he was very much a Hogan disciple. An absolute gentleman.”
Stevens also captained Australia to victory over the United States in the inaugural Eisenhower Trophy played at St Andrews in 1958.
He became the 10th member of Golf SA’s hall of fame, joining Tuohy, Bay McDonald, Peter Howard, Rhonda Watson, Murray Crafter, John Crosby, Jane Crafter, Pauline Sanderson and David Cherry.
Stevens’ induction was accepted by his son, Andrew, and wife, Christine, now living in Sydney.
The RF Stevens Trophy, awarded to the leading qualifier in the Men’s Club Championships, was introduced in 1981 and was named in honour of Bob in recognition of his amazing success and contribution to the Club and the golf industry in general.
