Glenelg’s Women’s Grade 1 and Bonnar Cup teams are both set to take on arch-nemesis, The Grange Golf Club, this Sunday in the 2014 Golf SA Pennant finals.
The Women’s Grade 1 team will face-off against The Grange on their home turf, hitting off from the 1st tee at 10:15am on the East Course.
Both Glenelg and The Grange have gone through the 2014 season undefeated with last Sunday’s final minor round match, which was to be the pre-cursor to this week’s final, washed out due to wet weather at Royal Adelaide Golf Club. As a result, neither team has had the opportunity to check out the opposition and that will certainly make for a close and exciting tussle around the recently redeveloped Greg Norman designed course.
As minor premiers, Glenelg will go into the final as slight favourite, but with only half an individual game separating the two teams on the ladder, The Grange will be no push-over. In fact, The Grange side is arguably their strongest that has been fielded in recent years and will have the comfort of home-course advantage, something our girls had in 2013’s win.
Jenny Lee, undefeated at number one, will no doubt play a major role against The Grange’s Kristalle Blum, who has had an up and down season in the top spot, winning two, halving one and losing one match. The other exciting contest should be the number two match with both Glenelg’s Elysia Yap and The Grange’s Ella Adams undefeated in that position throughout the season.
In the Bonnar Cup final, Glenelg has the opportunity to exact revenge this Sunday following last year’s disappointing loss when it takes on The Grange at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club from 11:10am.
Both teams have dominated the Bonnar Cup competition in 2014 with The Grange taking out the minor premiership after losing only one match to The Vines in round six. Glenelg, who sits only half a match behind, had its only loss during the season to The Grange, and as such you would anticipate The Grange will go into the final with the upper-hand.
However, Glenelg’s young side has performed strongly during the season and with a keen desire to make amends for last season’s disappointment, they will hit the ground running on Sunday morning around the tricky Hill’s layout.
Members are encouraged to come out and support both of Glenelg’s pennant teams this weekend as they compete for their respective 2014 pennant titles. Your support will be greatly appreciated by all players and officials.
