Glenelg’s Juniors ended their 2014 season on a high winning their last contest 2.5 to 1.5 against Flagstaff Hill at The Vines Golf Club on Sunday.
Jack Hynes’ aim was to finish his junior pennant career with a win and with Matilda Wheare carrying his bag, and his parents in toe, Jack did just that with a combination of crisp tee shots, attacking approaches and some great saves. His Flagstaff opponent, Ben Polkinghorn, was playing catch up all day. Surging to be 4 up with four to play and closing the match on the 16th to finish his season with two wins, two losses and a half.
Jackson Kalz halved the first hole. That was as close as his opponent Hugh Mitchell got for the day as Jackson put on a clinical display of match play. With solid drives, great approach shots and deft touch around the greens, Jackson finished off his opponent by winning his last six holes to run away with his match 8/6. Jackson’s first pennant season ends undefeated and he is looking to take this form into the current Winter Matchplay semi final being played later this month.
Jack Buchannan’s match was unfortunately cancelled as his opponent fell ill in the morning and with no reserves, the match was declared a no result. As with each week, Jack was more than happy support the team and caddied for Jackson.
Aaron Buchannan played a scratch match against Flagstaff opponent Taylah Cooper and won convincingly 5/4. Aaron is playing very steady golf and with a great short game, he has the perfect temperament for match play.
Hyoyi Pyun had her best chance of winning today, however after three holes, Hyoyi found herself 3 down. An hour later, news comes through that Hyoyi won six in row and was now 3 up! Fantastic, but by the 12th hole, the momentum once again changed and they were square….. Like a YoYo, Hyoyi finds form to win the next three… and with only three to play, this topsy turvey match turned again with her opponent Jai Brown winning the final three holes to square the match. Amazingly, without a single hole being halved.
So with the team finishing on a winning note, there is no doubt that the future of Junior Pennant at Glenelg is bright with a very young, talented and determined group of players.
A big thank you to the Club and the parents for supporting the Junior Pennant team this year.
