Wind was the theme of the 2013 Men’s Club Foursomes events, with high scores determining mother nature the true winner on the day. It was not going to be a matter of how many birdies could be made, but how many bogeys could be kept off the card.
In the Foursomes Championship, a number of pairings were well in the hunt after some average, but tight scoring in the morning. David Hiern & Michael Ratajewski led with a solid round of 79, one shot ahead of two young pairings, in Henry Duregon & Sam Raschella and Josh Hayes & Jack Hynes. Andrew Grzybowski & Anthony Olsen were a further shot back after a disappointing 81, while defending champions, John Noble & Campbell Rawson got off to a slow start with a round of 82.
Winds continued to pick up in the afternoon and players were truly tested. Hiern & Ratajewski’s afternoon round of 83 was more than respectable and they finished in third place, two shots behind Henry Duregon & Sam Raschella, who’s two rounds of 80 surprised many. In the end it was Olsen & Grzybowski’s round of 76 in the afternoon that put them ahead of the pack, with consistent golf keeping anything worse than a bogey off the card for the two rounds.
The handicap event always throws up some interesting results and the weather resulted in some weary heads in the Members Lounge following the round.
Henry Duregon & Sam Raschella’s afternoon round of net 76 was good enough to win the A Grade Foursomes Championship by one shot ahead of Andrew Grzybowski & Anthony Olsen, while Mark Footner & Keith Turner held off Peter Thomas & Allen Campbell by 1 shot in the B Grade event. Mike Panno & Rob Arbon were winners in the C Grade event on a countback from Adrian Harders & Bevan Roberts.
Congratulations to all players for competing in some of the most testing conditions seen in a long time.
