Solid win for Juniors in round 4 match

Report by James McDonald
(Team Manager)

Our opponents this week were the Grange Gold team, the second of The Grange’s teams.  Whilst they were their second team, they were not a team for us to take lightly and in the end gave us a bit of a scare.

The score looked pretty straight forward at 4.5 to 0.5, but it didn’t represent the closeness of the contest.  With approximately six holes remaining in the various matches we had two down, one square and two were just up.  In the end, the guys might not have played their best golf but they held their nerve and found a way to get a result, especially the three who finished on the 18th.

Josh Hodgson played at five and after making his debut last week was looking to secure his first win.  Josh made a strong start and was two up within three holes, but the game seesawed from then on.  With five holes to play, Josh found himself one down, but he managed to turn it his way and went down the 18th one up.  Josh halved the last and won his first pennant match.

Todd Williams also made a solid start and was two up for most of the front nine. He started to drop holes early on the back nine and with four to play he was back to square.  He won his 15th hole after hitting the pin with his chip shot but lost the 17th and headed down the 18th all tied.  After he blasted his tee shot through the 9th fairway, I wasn’t confident.  But somehow Todd was, as he got up and hit a high cut 8 iron around the trees and put it to three foot whilst yelling out ‘Be Good’ mid shot.  He knocked the subsequent putt in for birdie to win his game one up.

Jack Hynes had been off-colour all week and was not feeling his best on Sunday either – something about a dodgy schnitzel the week before.  But he put in another consistent performance and his long game was still of a high standard as he controlled his match all day to win 4/2.  He did not want to lose either because his opponent was one of his classmates from school.

Sam Raschella had been playing well leading into this game but like we all do, he had an off day.  To Sam’s credit though, he kept fighting away all day and after being two down with eight to go, he got it back to one up with three to go.  By the time he got to the 18th he was all square and a nice up and down from 25 metres short of the green allowed him to get out of the match with a half.

Haydn Booth rebounded from his loss the week before to record a solid 3/2 victory.  Haydn held his opponent at arm’s length for most of the day, then got a little run on during the back nine to open a handy lead and he cruised to the win.

The guys have now strung three wins together, if they keep this form up the rest is going to fall into place.  We all have a week off now and can get ourselves ready for the last half of the season.
